Hornets vs Nets Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NBA Game

The Nets aren't exactly running teams out of the gym, but their emphasis on defense has made them a great team to back ATS.

The Brooklyn Nets will look to continue their winning ways tonight when they host the Charlotte Hornets at the Barclays Center.

Brooklyn is playing its best basketball of the season, and I’m taking it to cover again tonight in my Hornets vs. Nets predictions below.

Hornets vs Nets prediction

My best bet
Nets -4 (-110 at bet365)

My analysis
The Brooklyn Nets kept most of their effective roster through the trade deadline, and that appears to be paying off in terms of results. Brooklyn has won for of its last five games, a stunning turnaround from a team that had previously lost 12 of 13 games.

It also helps the team is finally playing to its full potential. Cameron Johnson (19.3 ppg) has been back in the lineup for the last two games, while the Nets are also benefiting from improved play from D’Angelo Russell (13.0 ppg) and Nic Claxton (9.9 ppg).

It’s still true the Nets are struggling to score, but over the last five games, opponents have only been able to score an average of 96.6 ppg. It’s hard to lose games — or fail to cover — when you’re consistently holding teams below 100 points on a regular basis.

Meanwhile, the Charlotte Hornets come into tonight’s game having lost seven of their last eight. Notably, the Hornets have managed to cover in five of those games, but all of them came as an underdog of at least 9.5 points. They won’t have that big of a cushion to work with tonight.

The Hornets are playing shorthanded, in part because of a failed trade that has left Mark Williams in limbo. LaMelo Ball has missed seven of his last 10 games and is on the injury report again today — though since it’s the second game of a back-to-back for Charlotte, we won’t have any official word until near game time.

Regardless of the lineup, the Hornets don’t match up well with a Brooklyn team playing defense at this level. Charlotte has been one of the worst offensive teams in the NBA this year, putting up a 108.4 offensive rating while averaging 107.0 ppg. Granted, Brooklyn may be even worse offensively, but at least it can make up for that deficit by shutting down the opposition.

That played out in the last meeting between these teams when the Nets beat the Hornets 104-83.

Hornets vs Nets same-game parlay

Nets -3.5

Under 212.5

LaMelo Ball Under 26.5 points

These are two of the weakest offensive teams in the league, and even a total that’s at just 212.5 is too high. Brooklyn has hit the Under in eight of its last nine games, with totals of less than 210 points every time the Under hit.

LaMelo Ball has been struggling with an ankle issue, so it’s an open question how much he’ll play and how healthy he’ll be tonight.

Regardless, Ball hasn’t scored more than 26 points in any of his last six games, and I can’t see him going above that number in a game where it might be hard for Charlotte to break 100 points.

Ed's advice to new bettors is to always open multiple sportsbook accounts and check the odds at each before placing any bet. Successful sports betting is about consistently beating the closing line value, which requires finding spots where one book is offering odds far better than the rest of the market and jumping on those opportunities.
