NBA Sharp Money and Line Movement Report

By Patrick Everson

In the wee hours of Friday morning, the Clippers opened as 4-point favorites at PointsBet USA and slipped to -3.5 in short order. But by midmorning today, Los Angeles was up to -5, in part due to news that Utah guard Mike Conley (hamstring) would remain out of the lineup. Still, as of 5 p.m. ET, the Jazz are taking 69 percent of spread bets and 54 percent of spread money. The total is down to 222 from a 223.5 opener, although the Over is drawing 71 percent of bets/79 percent of money.

Against the spread (ATS) pick

Donovan Mitchell looked like he got hurt towards the end of Game 2, but the superstar wasn’t on the Game 3 injury report. That’s incredible news for the Jazz, as Mitchell is averaging 41.0 points per game in this series. Meanwhile, Mike Conley’s return remains a question mark. One would think that he’s healthy enough to go in this one, but the Jazz could hold him back because they have a two-game lead. Regardless of whether or not he’s able to go, look for the Clippers to be the aggressors here.

Game 2 definitely got away from Los Angeles at times, but the team did have a lead late in the fourth quarter. If Joe Ingles didn’t make a layup that bounced off the top of the backboard, we might be having a different discussion right now. Still, the point is that the Clippers have been right there in this series, and they should be able to bounce back now that they’re no longer in Salt Lake City. Utah’s unbelievable fans have made a massive difference in this series. While the Clippers don’t have a very passionate fanbase, these players should be better off just getting away from that deafening noise.

It’s also simply not possible that Mitchell and Jordan Clarkson will stay as hot as they’ve been early in this series. The two of them combined to score 61 points in Game 2, and they were a combined 12 for 21 from the 3-point line. Game 1 wasn’t all that different, as the two combined to go for 63 and went 12 for 29 from deep. Both of these guys are capable of getting hot on any given night — and Mitchell will almost certainly approach the 25-point mark here — but the efficiency is bound to dip on the road.

Also, you’re likely going to see a lot more out of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George at home. The Jazz have a couple of big-bodied wings that can get into them and make things difficult, but these guys are superstars. They’re going to show up eventually.

Don’t be surprised if the Clippers ease some minds with a bounce-back performance in Game 3.

PREDICTION: Clippers -4.5 (-105)

Over/Under pick

Game 2 of this series saw 228 total points scored and this one should be another high-scoring affair. While there are come all-world defensive players out there in this one — Leonard, George, Rudy Gobert are all remarkable defenders — these teams are just as adept at scoring the basketball, and both lineups feature shooters all throughout the lineup.

While Utah is unlikely to get quite as much firepower out of its backcourt in Los Angeles, the team should still be able to find ways to score a decent number of points, while the Clippers are just due for an offensive eruption. Shortly, we’re going to get a game in which both George and Leonard are cooking at the same time, and it could very well be this one.

PREDICTION: Over 222.5 (-110)

Player prop pick

If the Clippers are going to fight their way back into this series, it’s going to mean finding some way to meet Mitchell with resistance. In the second half of Thursday’s game, Los Angeles finally had some success in defending Utah’s young superstar, and the team should be able to keep him from reaching 32 in this one. Mitchell will likely score in the high 20s in this game, but those points should come on more shot attempts. Los Angeles knows the importance of making him work, and the team should find a way to lock in here.

PREDICTION: Donovan Mitchell Under 31.5 Points (-112)
