The Phoenix Suns are still adrift of the play-in spots in the West, but they can pad their win total tonight against a Utah Jazz team they’ve owned in recent years.
Phoenix has won eight straight against Utah, and my Jazz vs. Suns predictions expect both offenses to come out firing here at Footprint Center.
Check out my NBA picks for this January 11 clash, including a big night for Lauri Markkanen.
Jazz vs Suns prediction
My best bet
Over 228.5 (-110 at bet365)
My analysis
Mike Budenholzer has been searching for answers on both ends of the floor lately, and he found the right combinations in the Phoenix Suns win over the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday.
In particular, the offense looked sharper, with Bradley Beal pouring in 25 points off the bench and three other Suns finishing with at least 20 points. That balanced scoring is the key to success tonight as the hosts try to improve on their 17-19 record.
This matchup has been a points bonanza in the past two seasons, serving up six Overs in a row, including a 134-126 shootout in December – so I’m sticking with that script and taking the Over on a 228.5 total.
The Utah Jazz offense is more than capable of playing its part. The visitors have reached the 120-point mark in four of their past eight contests, and the Over is 6-3 in their last nine games.
Jordan Clarkson, Keyonte George and John Collins have been ruled out, but Utah still brings a scoring punch and should control the boards with Lauri Markkanen next to Walker Kessler.
Most of all, though, this is a wager on Kevin Durant and Devin Booker finding the right formula to attack a Utah defense that’s giving up 117.9 ppg, the fifth-worst mark in the NBA.
While Beal and Jusuf Nurkic can hardly be thrilled to be thrown into unfamiliar second-unit roles, it’s hard to argue that the Suns didn’t have more juice against the Hawks two nights ago, with the bench contributing 56 points.
Even without the heavier diet of Phoenix 3-pointers that Budenholzer would surely love to see, this feels like an Over to me.
Jazz vs Suns same-game parlay
With the Jazz missing some key scorers, I see Lauri Markkanen continuing to be a high-volume option for Will Hardy. Markkanen has taken at least 21 shots in three of his last four games, and while his efficiency has been erratic, he went 14-for-30 from 3-point range across his past two outings.
The Suns rank in the bottom half of the league in points allowed and 3-point percentage allowed per game, and that should mean a neon green light for Markkanen. The big Finn only had 19 points in the teams’ last meeting, but there’s far less competition for touches tonight.
I’m also fading Tyus Jones’ assists tally. With Phoenix rejigging its rotation, Jones has finished with four assists or fewer in each of his last four contests, and he’s likely to play second fiddle to Booker as a creator here.
Jones has seen his minutes dip so far this month, partly because Beal and Grayson Allen are playing big backcourt roles off the bench.

Jazz vs Suns spread and Over/Under analysis
- The Suns are 11-8 at Footprint Center this season, but 13-23 ATS overall.
- I’m wary of an 11-point spread here, with the Jazz posting an 8-2 ATS mark in their last 10 outings and picking up seven of their nine wins on the road.
- Though the Under is 7-1-2 in Phoenix’s past 10 games, the hosts rank seventh in the NBA in 3-point percentage and 12th in field goal percentage.
- The 1H Over is 45-31 in Utah’s last 76 contests.
