My analysis
The Dallas Mavericks looked solid in their season opener, beating Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs by a score of 120-109. Luka Doncic balled out with 28 points while Klay Thompson added 22 in his Dallas debut.
Jason Kidd’s squad made the NBA Finals for a reason earlier this year. This is a very good team and adding Klay to the fold makes them even better. Dallas had Friday off to travel to Arizona and prepare for Saturday’s matchup. The Phoenix Suns, however, had to head back home after their game against the Lakers and will have minimal time to recover.
That will undoubtedly play a factor, but what do the numbers say?
The Mavericks won two out of three meetings with Phoenix in 2023-24 and easily covered in both victories. The Suns also just allowed L.A. to shoot over 50% from 3-point land and as we know, Dallas relies heavily on the triple.
I expect the Mavs to get hot from deep here and take home their second win of the campaign.

Thompson shined on Thursday in his first Mavs game, showing exactly why the franchise decided to sign him in free agency. In just 26 minutes of action, the sharpshooter dropped 22 points and broke a franchise record in his debut, draining six of his 10 triples.
We’ve seen what Klay can do during his days in the Bay Area. Thompson is still one of the best shooters around and truly knows how to score the basketball at a high level. Sure, he may be the third option on Dallas behind Doncic and Kyrie Irving, but he’s still going to do his part.
While he averaged just over 12 ppg in four appearances against Phoenix a season ago, Klay is averaging 19.7 points in his career versus the Suns. That’s enough for me to take the Over.
Doncic was a strong MVP candidate in ‘23-24, averaging 33.9 points, 9.8 assists, and 9.2 rebounds while shooting 38.2% from the long range. I’m going to focus on his threes here.
The Slovenian superstar took an average of 10.6 treys per contest and drained 4.1 last year. In the first game of the season, Luka was 4-for-11 from beyond the arc.
In three outings vs. Phoenix last season, Doncic averaged a whopping 41.7 points and six triples on 12.7 attempts. The 25-year-old dominates when he plays this Western Conference rival, so look for Luka to shoot the lights out.
