Pacers vs Jazz Odds, Picks, and Predictions Tonight: Hitting the Right Notes

Believe it or not, the Utah Jazz are arguably the hottest team in the NBA and they’ll look to keep making some sweet music when they welcome the Indiana Pacers to the Delta Center on Monday night.

The Jazz have won 11 of their last 13 games, including the last five in a row overall. They have really found their rhythm on offense and even the defense is much more sound. (Did you take the Over on my music-related puns in this lede?)

Tonight, they’ll take on a Pacers team also known for its high-octane offense. Unfortunately, the engine that runs that offense has stalled as Tyrese Haliburton is out for the next little while with a hamstring injury and the NBA odds don’t like their chances as the Pacers are 7-point underdogs.

Does Indiana have a chance to keep up with Utah? Or will the Jazz keep the beat going? I break down this matchup and bring you the best bet in my NBA picks and predictions for Pacers vs. Jazz on Monday, January 15.

The Utah Jazz turnaround has been impressive. The Jazz started the season 10-18 and looked destined for the lottery. But then something clicked and Utah went on a run.

The Jazz are now 11-2 straight up in their last 13 games and it’s not like they are beating bums. Utah has wins over the Nuggets, Bucks, and 76ers just to name a few, and will look to stay hot on Monday night against the Indiana Pacers.

Led by All-Star Lauri Markkanen the Jazz have started to make some music on offense. During this run the Jazz rank fifth in offensive rating and 11th in effective field goal percentage during that stretch, putting up 125.2 points per game. 

Markkanen individually is putting up 23.7 points while shooting 39.5% from 3-point range while adding 8.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game.

The Jazz defense, which was horrible early on, has settled in as well. Utah ranks eighth in defensive rating over this 13-game stretch. 

All that means that the Pacers, who are without their best player in Tyrese Haliburton and will be playing the second half of a back-to-back, are in a tough spot.

Indiana had been playing well before Haliburton’s hamstring injury which is expected to keep him out a couple of weeks. The Pacers even won their first two games with him, before falling 117-109 as 10.5-point road underdogs against the Denver Nuggets last night but those two wins were against Washington and Atlanta.

The Pacers top-rated offense is just clearly not the same without Haliburton and his 23.6 points and 12.5 assists per game. Starter Aaron Nesmith is also questionable with a shin injury that kept him out of the game vs. the Nuggets, so the Pacers depth could be tested. 

If the Pacers can’t keep the offense rolling without Haliburton you can’t expect their defense to keep them in it. Indiana ranks 26th in defensive rating and 25th in opponent eFG%.

As I said, this is just a really tough spot for the Pacers. I’m laying the points with the red-hot Jazz tonight.

As always our same-game parlay tips off with my best bet, which for this NBA matchup is Utah -7. Part of the reason the Jazz have seen this resurgence is because they get contributions from some unexpected sources these days.

If I had told you a few weeks ago guys like Kris Dunn and Simone Fontecchio would be contributing to the Jazz’s success you probably would have laughed at me.

It was a wonder if Dunn would ever catch on in the NBA after bouncing around for several years. But it looks like he’s found a home with the Jazz. Dunn has started every game during this impressive 13-game stretch averaging 5.2 points, 6.1 assists, and 3.7 rebounds per game. 

While he’s not doing a ton of scoring his number is too low against a Pacers team that gives up the third most points to opposing guards. So, let’s add Over 5.5 points for Dunn. 

And let’s close this SGP out with Fontecchio to go Over 7.5 points. The Italian native is putting up 8.8 points per game while shooting 28.9% from 3-point range. The role players help the Jazz cover tonight.

Pacers vs Jazz spread and Over/Under analysis

The Jazz opened this matchup as 7.5-point home favorites but the line has moved very slightly in the direction of the Pacers with the spread sitting at Utah -7 as of Monday afternoon.

This is probably due to the fact that the Pacers have been an excellent bet lately, going 9-1-1 ATS over their last 11 games, including covering as 10.5-point dogs in Denver last night. But like I said, this is a tough spot, against a team playing very good basketball at the moment. Not to mention, the Jazz are a not-too-shabby 11-2 ATS over this 13-game stretch.

The total hit the board at 247 and has been bet down slightly to 246 as of writing. Even coming down it’s still the highest total on the board for today’s NBA slate. 

The Pacers are used to high totals like this, but with no Haliburton and Utah’s improved defense, I am staying away from the total here.
