Wizards vs Hawks picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Spread analysis

The Hawks are headed to the play-in round with a 41-38 record but will need to pick up some wins if they want to avoid single-elimination or gain home-court advantage. They are fresh off a 118-108 loss to the Raptors last night which snapped a five-game winning streak where they had covered in each contest.

It's been another rough season for Washington who will miss the postseason for the third time in the last four years. The Wizards lost their best player Bradley Beal (23.2 points per game) to a season-ending injury in January and then shut down Kyle Kuzma (17.1 ppg) a few weeks ago.

However they haven't packed it in from an effort standpoint, going 5-2 straight up and against the spread in their last seven games, and are coming off a 132-114 win against the Timberwolves last night.

Kristaps Porzingis, who was traded for at the trade deadline, is looking healthy and is averaging 23.3 ppg in the last 10 games. Former Wizard Tomas Satoransky was re-signed after being released by the Spurs and has settled into the rotation, averaging 8.5 assists per game in the last six contests.

Meanwhile, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (22 ppg in the last six contests) and former Top-10 draft pick Rui Hachimura (dropping at least 17 points in four of the last five games) have also emerged as offensive threats.

Led by Trae Young (28.2 ppg, 9.7 apg), Atlanta has the second-best offensive rating in the league. However, the Hawks have been brutal on the other end of the floor and rank just 26th in defensive rating.

With how bad they have been defensively it's tough to trust them as double-digit faves against a Wizards team that has been filling up the hoop and managed to keep things very close when these teams met up last month.

Prediction: Wizards +10.5 (-110 at SportsInteraction)

Over/Under analysis

This is a big number, but with how these teams have been playing lately, the Over looks like the play. We mentioned that the Hawks are just 26th in the NBA in defensive rating, but the Wizards are just one spot ahead of them in that category.

It's a good thing both of these teams can get buckets. Atlanta is sixth in the NBA with 113.7 ppg and has upped that number to 125 ppg in its last six games. The Hawks have also been deadly from long range, connecting on 37.3% of their shots from beyond the arc — the second-best number in the league.

We mentioned the various Washington players stepping up on offense lately. Thanks to them, the Wizards have scored at least 127 points in three of their last four games, with the Over cashing in each of those contests.

In addition, with both of these teams on the tail-end of a back-to-back and the Wiz playing for nothing but pride, we could see some even faster and looser play from both sides. With the Over going 5-1 in the Hawks' last six contests playing on zero days of rest, that's the direction we're leaning towards.

Prediction: Over 233 (-110 at William Hill)

Best bet

Given our previous two predictions, it makes sense that we're most confident about the Wizards going Over their team total of 111.5.

The Hawks are 22nd in the league in scoring defense with 112.5 points per game allowed, and that number has ballooned to 115.8 ppg over their last 18 contests.

The Wizards are averaging 113.5 ppg on a sizzling 49% shooting since the start of March. Although they were held to 102 points by the Celtics on Sunday, Boston is the top-rated defensive team in the league, and scoring against Atlanta should be much easier.

Keep in mind that the Wiz have dropped more than 120 points against stingy defenses such as the Warriors and Mavs over the last 10 days.

Pick: Wizards Team Total Over 111.5 (-115 at Bet365)
