In any other year, you probably wouldn’t give more than a passing glance to a college football betting matchup between Liberty and Coastal Carolina.
In 2020, however, the Cure Bowl between the Flames and the Chanticleers has the potential to be one of the best matchups on the slate. Each team has carved out its own unique story in the college football landscape, and there is only a single loss between them. So if you’re looking for a game to ease that inevitable post-Christmas letdown, this may just be the one.

Against the Spread (ATS) Pick
You’ve probably heard plenty about the job that head coach Hugh Freeze has done at Liberty, and the attention is well warranted. The Flames roll into Florida with an impressive 9-1 record and coming off a 45-0 drubbing of UMass, and they’ll feel right at home here. Liberty is looking to repeat as Cure Bowl Champions after beating Georgia Southern in 2019.
The Flames have a rushing attack that produces 252.1 yards per game—good for eighth in the country. Quarterback Malik Willis is dynamic and is the only signal-caller who can boast about being ranked in the Top 20 nationally in both passing and rushing touchdowns.
The Chanticleers were unable to compete in the Sun Belt Championship game, which was canceled because of COVID-19, but Coastal Carolina remains a legitimate force. Two weeks ago, they won a 42-38 shootout on the road at Troy thanks to a balanced offensive attack. Quarterback Grayson McCall threw for 338 yards and three touchdowns with receiver Jaivon Heiligh recording 11 catches for 138 yards and two scores. The Chanticleers also got 120 yards rushing from CJ Marable.
Coastal Carolina appears to be a team of destiny, with a Top-10 ranking and the first undefeated season in school history. That said, the Flames have a single loss this season—by a point to North Carolina State. I think the Chanticleers complete their perfect season, but it’s going to be close.
PREDICTION: Liberty +6.5 (-110)
Over/Under Pick
The money immediately hit the Under in this matchup, dropping the Total a touch, but I still believe there is plenty of value here.
The Flames give up 19.2 points per game while the Chants give up 16.8. The Under is 4-0 in Liberty’s last four games against teams from the Sun Belt, and while I expect a few explosive plays, this should be a tightly contested battle that stays below the Total.
PREDICTION: Under 58.5 (-110)
