Understanding futures odds

Futures bets are wagers placed on events which may - or may not - happen in the future, such as which team will win the Super Bowl or which player will win MVP honors. These bets are decided by longer-term results and are usually settled at the end of the season.

Before making a futures bet, it helps to understand how futures odds work. Let's look at the Kansas City Chiefs, who opened as +600 favorites to win Super Bowl 58. If you were to place a $100 bet on the Chiefs to win their second title in two years and they were successful, you would receive a return of $700 ($600 of profit and your original $100 stake).

On the other hand, the Arizona Cardinals have much longer Super Bowl odds, which indicates they're far less likely to win the championship this year. If you do decide to place a $100 wager at their current odds of +24,000, and the Cardinals do the unthinkable, you will cash in for $24,100 ($24,000 of profit and your original $100 stake).

You can calculate the implied probability and potential payouts for your futures bet with our handy odds calculator.
