Monday Night Football predictions: Buccaneers vs Giants

All the talk is about Tom Brady and the Buccaneers offense, but the defensive unit is quietly one of the NFL's best, ranking among the league's best in pass and run stopping DVOA.

Against the spread (ATS) pick

The Giants season was best encapsulated in quarterback Daniel Jones' 80-yard scramble last week when he tripped over nothing and fell flat on his face with nothing but pay dirt in front of him. New York has been nothing short of ugly on offense without Saquon Barkley, ranking 31st in the league in both scoring (17.4 points per game) and yards (282.4 yards per contest).

The G-men haven't been great on the defensive side of the ball either, ranking 21st in passing yards allowed and letting opponents convert on 50.5 percent of third downs (fifth-worst in the league).

The Tom Brady era didn't get off to the greatest start in Tampa Bay, as the Buccaneers lost their season opener to New Orleans. But since then the Bucs have been rolling, winning five of their last six games and heating up on offense as Brady gets more comfortable with the bevy of weapons at his disposal.

Brady is coming off his best performance as a Buccaneer, and Tampa Bay's running game has shown improvement as well with Leonard Fournette and Ronald Jones II providing a solid tandem. Don't overthink this one and back the Bucs on the spread.

PREDICTION: Tampa Bay -10.5 (-110)

Over/Under pick

While the Bucs' success on offense was expected, their strong play on the other side of the ball might be a surprise to those who didn't realize how effective they were last year, despite turnover-machine Jameis Winston making their job a living hell.

Tampa Bay has one of the top units in the league against both the run and the pass, ranking third in the NFL in pass defense DVOA and first in rush defense DVOA according to Football Outsiders.

The Buccaneers are allowing just 66 rushing yards per game while holding opposing QBs to a passer rating of just 84.3 (sixth-best in the NFL), and rank third in the league in sacks. Expect Tampa Bay to shut down Jones and the Giants.

That said, while New York's offense has been absolutely putrid their defense isn't the worst thing in the world. The G-Men rank a respectable 14th in the league in both points and yards allowed. Take the Under.

PREDICTION: Under 47 (-110)

Team Prop

The Giants have the second-worst red-zone offense in the league, scoring a touchdown on just 33.3 percent of trips into the opponent's 20-yard line. While that's not ideal for New York fans, it does mean plenty of action for kicker Graham Gano, who is 15-16 on field goals this year, including one booming kick from 55 yards out.

Gano didn't attempt a field goal last week but had converted at least two field goals in each of his previous five games. Look for the Bucs and their 11th-ranked red-zone defense to frustrate the G-Men when they get within sight of the goal line, leading to multiple field goal attempts and conversions for Gano.

PREDICTION: New York field goals - Over 1.5 (-125)
