Jalen Hurts MNF props
Grounded
Having a negative outlook on Hurts’ rushing prop this Monday night should prove to be a positive outcome for the bankroll.
Oddsmakers have set the line on Hurts’ rushing total at 42.5, which seems absurdly high. He’s failed to reach that threshold in five of his last six games, and has averaged only 29.8 rushing yards per contest over that span. Shrink that sample down to his last three tilts, and the average plummets to 20 rushing yards per game.
The Alabama product has taken off much less often over those three most recent affairs, averaging only 6.7 rushing attempts. Hurts carried the ball an average of 13.6 times over his first five efforts on the campaign.
The Commanders boast a solid rush defense, ranking 10th in the NFL in yards allowed per game on the ground (113.2). This unit also claims 10th in rushing yards allowed to quarterbacks this season (14.8 per game), and held Hurts to 20 yards on nine attempts when these two teams met in Week 3.
Prop: Under 42.5 rushing yards (-114)
Passes pile up
Not only should Washington prevent Hurts from getting loose all game long, but they should also keep the clamps on Philadelphia running back Miles Sanders. That in turn will force Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen to keep calling for passing plays — where the Commanders can be capitalized upon.
Sanders is having a strong season — averaging 82 yards per game on the ground — but as we mentioned above, Washington is more than capable of frustrating the opposing rush attack. The Penn State product mustered a season-low 46 yards on 15 carries when he battled the Commanders earlier this year.
He joined a list headlined by Ezekiel Elliott (49 yards), Aaron Jones (23 yards), and Dalvin Cook (47 yards) of star running backs stonewalled by this defense in 2022.
The line on Hurts’ passing attempts of 29.5 is a lazy one, as he’s averaging 29.8 throws per game this year. It doesn’t account for the fact that Hurts went to the air 35 times against Washington in Week 3, and may have to at least equal that in order to win this one.
Prop: Over 29.5 passing attempts (-114)
Finding the end zone
The Commanders’ 18th-place ranking in passing yards allowed per game (217.4) doesn’t tell the whole story of how vulnerable this unit is. Hurts should get to at least two passing scores in this spot, and at generous odds to boot.
Washington has surrendered 1.78 touchdowns per game through the air this year, the fifth-worst mark in football. They’ve allowed Jared Goff, Cooper Rush, Aaron Rodgers, and Kirk Cousins to all throw for at least two touchdowns in a game this year, as well as Hurts. The quarterbacks that didn’t reach the two-touchdown plateau against the Commanders this year are not exactly murderer’s row: Trevor Lawrence, Ryan Tannehill, Justin Fields, and Sam Ehlinger.
Hurts accounted for three of the 16 total passing touchdowns the Commanders have coughed up this season in Week 3, and has gone for at least two touchdowns with his arm in three straight contests.
Prop: Over 1.5 passing touchdowns (+105)
