Rams vs 49ers predictions
Rams -3.5 (-110)
The Rams are 7-2 SU and have the third-best odds to win the Super Bowl, but are fresh off a 28-16 loss to a Tennessee team without Derrick Henry. The Rams outgained the Titans 347-194 in that contest and had five more minutes of possession. However, a pair of early interceptions from Matthew Stafford caused them to fall behind 21-3 at the half and they never recovered.
The 49ers are 1-5 SU and ATS in their last six games and are coming off a similar performance, losing by 14 points at home to a Cardinals team missing its own MVP candidate in Kyler Murray. The 49ers were trailing 31-7 until midway through the third quarter and two late scores made the game seem closer than it was.
Last week was Stafford's worst performance as a Ram, and it's no coincidence that it's also the most pressure he's been under with the team. Stafford was sacked five times in that contest after eating dirt only eight times through L.A.'s first eight games of the season.
Fortunately, Stafford and the Rams get a banged-up San Fran defense that ranks 24th in the league in pressure rate and was shredded through the air by Colt McCoy, Christian Kirk, and Antoine Wesley (who??) last week. Stafford leads the league in passing yards (2,771) and QBR (69.6) and gets a new toy after the Rams signed disgruntled but talented wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.
On the other side of the ball, the Rams are fourth in the league in defensive DVOA according to Football Outsiders, while ranking second in sacks per game (3.1) and sixth in yards allowed per pass attempt (6.4).
The 49ers have been solid statistically on offense, but there's a reason they scored fewer than 20 points in three of their last four games and have been patiently waiting to toss veteran QB Jimmy Garoppolo to the discard pile. San Fran ranks just 30th in the league in third-down conversion percentage and is tied for 27th in giveaways per game. Expect the Rams to bounce back with a win and cover on Monday night.
Over 49 (-110)
Garoppolo is definitely in the hot seat while Niners coach Kyle Shanahan waits for third overall selection Trey Lance to be NFL-ready. But Jimmy G has actually played very well lately, throwing for over 320 yards with a passer rating over 100 in each of his last two games.
It's the Niners' defense that has been struggling lately, getting torched by a bunch of backups last week, which is kind of fitting when you consider that they're loaded with second-stringers themselves.
Once again, San Francisco has been bitten by the injury bug, with defensive starters like Dee Ford, Dre Greenlaw, and Javon Kinlaw on the long-term IR and other studs like Arik Armstead and Jimmie Ward listed as questionable. You know things are bad when even the backups replacing the injured starters (like Tavon Wilson) are getting injured themselves.
You might feel bad about San Fran and its depleted secondary, but you should definitely take advantage of that mismatch. The Rams have the league's leading receiver in Cooper Kupp, and added Beckham to an attack that was already ranked second in the league in offensive DVOA and third in passing DVOA.
George Kittle Over 51.5 receiving yards (-114)
Kittle was limited in practice on Thursday due to a calf injury that kept him out of action for three weeks. While we suggest waiting until his status becomes more clear before we bet this, we expect that rest to be maintenance-related since he returned to the field last week and looked great.
Despite playing in just 73 percent of San Fran's offensive snaps (a low workload for the workhorse), Kittle received eight targets and turned them into six catches for 101 yards.
When healthy, Kittle might be the best TE in the league, and while Deebo Samuel has emerged as a terrific target out wide, he'll likely face off against Rams All-Pro corner Jalen Ramsey on Monday. The Rams defense has been far more vulnerable against tight ends, allowing 60.9 receiving yards per game to the position. Expect Garoppolo to lean on Kittle and take the Over on his receiving yards.
