The Calgary Flames finish up their three-game road trip with another game tonight at the Enterprise Center against the St. Louis Blues, who beat them 2-1 on Tuesday.
Nazem Kadri mustered up some opportunities the other night and I expect him to do so again in my Flames vs Blues predictions.
Let’s take a closer look at my NHL picks for Thursday, January 16 ahead of the puck dropping at 8 p.m. ET on Sportsnet West.
Flames vs Blues prediction
My Flames pick
Nazem Kadri Over 3.5 shots on goal (+130 at BET99)
My Flames analysis
Calgary Flames forward Nazem Kadri is enjoying a solid campaign, sitting second on the team in points with 29 — 15 goals and 14 assists. When it comes to shots, he’s averaging 3.4 per game, which is just a tad under his total for tonight’s matchup.
While the veteran has hit the Over in shots on goal just once in his last five outings, Kadri did cash the Over in four consecutive games before that. He registered three shots on Tuesday versus the St. Louis Blues. In the meeting before that this season, he got four on net.
Also, Kadri tends to create more chances on the road, averaging 3.75 SOG as opposed to just 3.13 on home ice. He's second on the team among forwards in average ice time with 18:45, giving him ample opportunity to take his shots. Kadri also leads the team in shot attempts per 60 minutes, according to Natural Stat Trick
The Blues are 14th in SOG goals allowed and while they don't take a ton of penalties, they struggle to stop opposing power plays when they do, operating at a 73.87% success rate (7th-worst in the NHL). Kadri, who skates on the top PP unit, will be hungry to help Calgary bounce back here.
Lock in this bet at favorable +130 odds, which feels like an overcorrection based on recent results instead of weighing his true probability of clearing his SOG total.
Flames vs Blues same-game parlay (SGP)
Matt Coronato has been solid for Calgary so far this season, scoring 10 goals and assisting 13. Tonight, we’ll focus on his playmaking because Coronato has been doing it at a high level lately, tallying an assist in four of his last six games.
Coronato had assisted in three straight before failing to register a point in Tuesday’s loss at the Enterprise Center. While he hasn’t played necessarily well against the Blues over the last two seasons, the 22-year-old is on a roll lately. Win or lose, he’ll get involved tonight. He has four assists in just six appearances in January.
Although the Under hit in a 2-1 score on Tuesday, that was a rare occurrence in this matchup. Before that, the Over hit in nine of 10 meetings. The only game that failed to reach 4.5 goals was a 3-0 win for St. Louis in 2023.
Goals are never hard to come by between these two clubs. In three games in 2024, there were a minimum of seven goals scored.
