If the Flames end up being competitive against the red-hot Panthers, MacKenzie Weegar will be a big reason why.

The Calgary Flames will try to get back into the win column this afternoon when they take on the surging Florida Panthers, who have been on a tear with wins in seven of their last nine.

Calgary blueliner MacKenzie Weegar has pushed the pace offensively from the backend and I’ll look for him to pile up some shots against his former club in my Flames vs. Panthers predictions and NHL picks for Saturday, March 1.

My Flames analysis
The Calgary Flames came out of the 4 Nations Face-Off break with two straight wins but had that run snapped on Thursday in a 3-0 defeat against Tampa Bay.

Calgary’s road trip through the Sunshine State continues this afternoon when the Flames head to Amerant Bank Arena to take on the Florida Panthers, one of the NHL’s hottest teams over the last month.

If the Flames are going to have any success today, it’ll be at least in part due to the efforts of MacKenzie Weegar, who has been one of the club’s most impactful offensive performers over the last month.

Since the start of February, Weegar has racked up seven points in eight games, tied with Jonathan Huberdeau for second-most among all Flames skaters behind only Nazem Kadri (9). On top of that, Weegar’s 26 shots over that span also rank second to Kadri (33).

The defenseman has put at least three pucks on net in three straight games and six of his last eight contests, averaging 3.25 shots per game over that span. He's also logged a team-high 25:06 of ice time per game over the last month, so he should have plenty of opportunity to cash this for us tonight.

Flames vs Panthers same-game parlay (SGP)

MacKenzie Weegar Over 2.5 shots

Sam Bennett Over 2.5 shots

Panthers moneyline

While Weegar has been a shot machine for the Flames, Bennett has done the same for the Panthers. The Florida forward leads the club with 188 shots this season, averaging more than three shots on net per game. He's logged 3+ shots in 15 of his last 16 outings and should be a lock to do so again this afternoon.

The Panthers opened at -235 and I don’t see any reason to go against the grain. Florida is 7-2 over its last nine games while Calgary has wins in just two of its last six.
