The Winnipeg Jets will continue life without Gabe Vilardi on Friday night as they play host to the New Jersey Devils.
My Devils vs. Jets predictions see fellow top liner Mark Scheifele stepping up in absence of Vilardi, finding twine for the first time in more than three weeks.
Let’s dive deeper into my NHL picks for March 28.
Jets vs Devils prediction
My Jets pick: Mark Scheifele anytime goal (+173 at Pinnacle)
My Jets analysis
Mark Scheifele is having one of the best goal scoring seasons of his career. He has scored with increased efficiency at home, where he’s found the back of the net 21 times through 37 games.
Only Tage Thompson (24), William Nylander (23), and Leon Draisaitl (22) have scored more goals than Scheifele on home soil.
What’s impressive is Scheifele has posted those numbers while failing to score in nine straight games, four of which were played in Winnipeg.
He’s in his longest drought of the season — overall and when isolating home games — and yet his numbers are still fantastic.
While the New Jersey Devils have defended well for much of the season, we have seen a noticeable dip of late. That coincides with injuries to two of their Top 4 defensemen in Jonas Siegenthaler and Dougie Hamilton, not to mention one of the league’s best play drivers in Jack Hughes.
The Devils rank 24th in expected goals against and 26th in goals allowed at 5v5 over the last 10 games. It’s a solid 5v5 matchup for Scheifele — certainly better than it would have been earlier in the season.
It’s also a fine spot for Scheifele on the man advantage. New Jersey’s penalty killing metrics have also slipped, with the team sitting 23rd in expected goals allowed over the last 10. That’s well below where they sit (13th) over the course of the entire season.
The Devils have conceded at least three goals in five of the last six games, a trend that will be difficult to buck against Scheifele and the Winnipeg Jets.
Jets vs Devils odds analysis
Winnipeg opened as heavy favorites and the line has shifted even further in their direction, which shouldn’t be surprising.
The Jets have dominated at home all season long — they own a 26-6-4 record in Winnipeg — and are facing a Devils squad that is dealing with several key injuries and inconsistencies. This is a tough matchup for them to truly find their game.
The total has held steady and could see some movement based on what the Devils do in goal. If Jacob Markstrom starts the first leg of this back-to-back, there could be some value on the Over as he has struggled mightily since returning from injury.
If it’s Jake Allen vs. Connor Hellebuyck, the Over isn’t too appealing considering how well both grade in Goals Saved Above Expected.
