Maple Leafs vs Canucks Picks and Predictions: Buds Get Right on West Trip

Toronto hasn't lost back-to-back games in two months, and this Vancouver team isn't about to end that streak. With Van City missing a key blue-liner, our Maple Leafs vs. Canucks picks don't predict a fun evening for the home side.

The Toronto Maple Leafs saw their six-game winning streak snapped in Calgary on Thursday but will have a solid opportunity tonight to start another one when they take on the Vancouver Canucks in B.C. tonight. Unfortunately, for the visitors, they went 0-4 SU in Vancouver a season ago, and a win isn't a layup for Sheldon Keefe’s team Saturday night.

Can Petr Mrazek continue to wrestle away starts from a struggling Jack Campbell? Will the Canucks look to start strong after giving up five goals in the first period Wednesday versus the Islanders? Find out in our free NHL picks and predictions for Maple Leafs vs. Canucks on February 12.

Moneyline/Puck line analysis

The Leafs took their six-game winning streak into Calgary to face a Flames team that had just played the night before and left Alberta empty-handed after a 5-2 loss. A lot of credit should be given to Calgary goalie Jacob Markstrom, who stopped 46 shots.

Struggling Jack Campbell did the team no favors in net as he was on the hook for all five goals and has surrendered three or more goals in seven of his last eight starts. It’s no surprise the Leafs will turn to Petr Mrazek tonight.

The Leafs’ backup has been pressed into more action lately and is 4-0 SU in his last four starts having given up just nine goals in the process. Mrazek is the better goalie right now and should be able to keep tabs on a Vancouver offense that will likely be without its best player in defenseman Quinn Hughes. Hughes leads the team in time on ice and power-play assists while also sitting second in points.

Toronto will be back to full strength on the blue line tonight as well. Jake Muzzin made his return to the lineup in Calgary after missing seven games. The Buds went 6-1 SU in his absence, and he should be back to full health after playing on Thursday.

The Leafs have been living and dying by their offense of late and despite the 48-shot performance vs. the Flames, they were unable to steal a point or two. Despite the bump in the road, this is still the league’s second-best offense since January 1 at 4.21 goals per game and is running the No. 1 power play. Some secondary scoring would be nice for the Buds but the top line of Bunting-Matthews-Marner is impossible to keep off the scoreboard right now as the three skaters have a combined 13 goals over their last four games.

Tasked with slowing down this offense is a Vancouver team that just allowed six goals to the Islanders, who rank 28th in goals per game. New York potted five goals in the game’s first 20 minutes, and although the Leafs will likely see Thatcher Demko and not Jaroslav Halak, the Canucks will be in tough to shut down the visitors. Toronto saw Demko four times last season and the American goalie finished with a sub-.900 SV% and a 3.54 GAA.

The Canucks better play a clean game because they own the league’s worst penalty kill at 71%. They have been a great defensive team at 5 on 5, but without Hughes helping one of the worst offenses in the league, they can't hang with the Leafs, who have not lost back-to-back games since early December.

The last time the Leafs were in Vancouver (last season), the Leafs closed as -300 ML favorites and closed as -160 favorites with Micahel Hutchinson in net in the another meeting in Vancouver. The Leafs also closed as -195 ML favorites in St. Louis recently which makes this -200 price tag 15-30 points short. We are fine with wagering a little more and taking the ML here.

Prediction: Maple Leafs ML (-200)

Over/Under analysis

The Leafs have been an Over-wagon of late and are 6-0 to the Over in six straight and 10-2 O/U in their last 12 games. Campbell's struggles have certainly been a factor but Mrazek is 3-0 to the Over in his last three games and has allowed three or more goals in two of those.

Thursday’s game in Calgary was a perfect example of Toronto’s ability to see goals scored in bunches. Zero goals were netted in the game’s first 20 minutes but the second frame saw five total goals. The Leafs sit seventh in 5-on-5 goals scored and second in expected goals.

Although the season series was 6-2-1 to the Under last season, all but two games closed with a total of 6.5 while at least six goals were scored in five of them. If an Islanders vs. Canucks game can see nine goals with a closing total of 5, a game featuring one of the best offenses in hockey should flirt with at least six goals.

Demko has been great at home this season but the Leafs had their way with him last season. In the eight games Demko saw Toronto, the young goaltender gave up 14 total goals including 13 at even strength. The Coyotes managed 36 shots against the Canucks on Tuesday while the Islanders buried six goals on Wednesday vs. Vancouver.

Even without Hughes, this Vancouver offense has managed eight goals in two games since the All-Star break and has had success in scoring against the Leafs, as the Canucks managed 16 goals in the four meetings on home ice a season ago. The total in this matchup has consistently been 6.5 and the Leafs are on an Over heater.

Prediction: Over 6 (-110)

Best bet

With the Leafs’ team total sitting at a reasonable -115 for the Over 3.5 thanks to some short odds on the ML, we’re happy to put our money behind the Toronto offense yet again. The league’s best power play should be able to pot one or two goals against the league’s worst penalty kill while Toronto has beaten Thatcher Demko multiple times over the last year and a bit.

If the Islanders' weak offense can put up a six-pack vs. the Canucks, Auston Matthews and the boys in blue and white will get plenty of opportunities. This is a Leafs team that doesn’t drop back-to-back games often and can score in bunches.

Pick: Maple Leafs team total Over 3.5 (-115)
