My Leafs pick: Anthony Stolarz Over 26.5 saves (-115 at Sports Interaction)
My Leafs analysis
The Toronto Maple Leafs lead the Florida Panthers by exactly two points, enhancing the importance of this game.
Florida is coming off two disappointing losses to the Montreal Canadiens, mustering up just two goals in each contest. The Cats failed to record 30 shots in both games, something they’d achieved in the three games prior and most of the season.
The Panthers rank third in the NHL, averaging 31.5 shots per game. This has been part of their recipe for success this season, so Head Coach Paul Maurice will emphasize getting pucks on net.
Unfortunately for Toronto, it's struggled lately to keep pucks away from the goalie. The Leafs have allowed 30+ shots in six of their last seven outings, giving up an average of 31.7 shots per game— the fourth most in the NHL during that span.
Luckily, the Leafs have a goaltending rotation that has been stellar and has turned away a majority of those shots, averaging 28.66 saves per game with a combined .914 SV% in that seven-game stretch.
Anthony Stolarz gets the nod for the Maple Leafs tonight against the Cats. He’s averaging 27.25 saves per game this season and is coming off a 35-save 3-1 win over the Kings Saturday night.
Additionally, the Leafs are returning home from the vaunted California road trip. Teams typically struggle in their first game back from the West Coast.
Therefore, given the importance of this game for the Panthers and the Leafs' propensity to give up shots at a high volume, I expect him to have a similarly busy night and go Over his prop total of 26.5 saves.
Maple Leafs vs Panthers same-game parlay (SGP)
The Leafs may give up a lot of shots, but they haven't been lit up in the goals department. With Stolarz’s 2.35 GAA in net and Vezina winner Sergei Bobrovsky on the other side, I expect quite the tendy duel. The Under is 7-3 over the last 10 meetings between the Leafs and Panthers.
Sam Bennett averages 3.2 shots per game and has hit this number in five of the last six meetings against Toronto.
Since being elevated back up to the second line, Bobby McMann has registered two or more shots in six of his last seven games.
