My Leafs analysis
The Toronto Maple Leafs are looking to win their sixth straight game for the first time in the Auston Matthews captaincy era.
They’ll need to get past the San Jose Sharks, who come to town motivated to snap an eight-game losing streak against a team playing its third game in four nights.
Throughout the Sharks’ dismal eight-game stretch, they’ve given up a whopping 4.25 goals per game, ranking in the bottom 10 in most defensive and goaltending metrics, per Natural Stat Trick.
This should have the Leafs salivating with the team finding a second gear offensively coming out of the 4 Nations Face-Off. The Buds are averaging a league-best 5.00 goals per game over this five-game winning streak.
Enter Auston Matthews.
The Leafs captain was in a major funk in February, scoring just one goal — an empty-netter, at that — throughout the entire month. However, the calendar flipped over the weekend and he rifled one past the Penguins netminder for his first non-empty net goal in over a calendar month.
A true monkey-off-the-back kind of goal.
Matthews has been known to be a streaky scorer throughout his career, with goals coming in bunches. Hopefully, that trend continues tonight after snapping his skid on Sunday afternoon.
Add in his usual dominance against the Sharks throughout his career with 12 goals in 13 games, and it's a solid play as tonight’s best bet.
Additionally, Matthews has a strong chance to find the back of the net on the power play, which has been red-hot with a 32.4% success rate since January 15. The Sharks PK ranks 23rd in the NHL with a 76% kill rate.
Maple Leafs vs Sharks same-game parlay (SGP)
The Leafs captain has hit this SOG number in eight of his last 10 contests, averaging 3.93 shots per game this season.
Toronto has been one of the hottest teams in hockey, while San Jose has been the worst with eight straight losses, sporting a -16 goal differential in that span. The Leafs have also been victorious in four of the last five meetings between the two.
