Maple Leafs vs Sharks Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game

San Jose's penalty kill is piss poor, and the Leafs captain will have no issues capitalizing while a man up.

Tonight's NHL betting slate features a cross-conference clash between the Toronto Maple Leafs and San Jose Sharks at the SAP Center.

My Maple Leafs vs. Sharks predictions expect Auston Matthews to strike on the power play as he helps his team avenge a previous loss to San Jose.

Find out why in my free NHL picks for March 27.

My Leafs pick: Auston Matthews Over 0.5 power-play points (+135 at Sports Interaction)

My Leafs analysis
The Toronto Maple Leafs begin their California road trip in San Jose tonight, hoping to get revenge after squandering a 2-0 lead to the lowly Sharks in their own barn a few weeks ago.

Outside of that 3-2 meltdown in overtime on March 3, the Buds have won four of the previous five meetings by a combined score of 17-8, boasting a 42% success rate on the power play.

The man advantage is the only way the Maple Leafs scored in back on March 3, which is understandable since San Jose has the league's 26th-ranked penalty kill that is operating at just 74%.

Even more worrisome for the Sharks is the underlying metrics for their PK have been even worse, ranking 31st in expected-goals against and giving up the third most scoring chances while shorthanded per 60 minutes of penalty kill time.

This is the market I’m hoping to take advantage of for tonight's best bet, and I’m eyeing Auston Matthews.

The Maple Leafs' power play has scored seven times over their last five games, with AM34 contributing on six of those goals. He leads the Leafs with nine points on the man-advantage in March where the Buds’ PP has been red hot, operating at a league-best 42.9%.

Meanwhile, the Sharks have killed off just 66.4% of their penalties this month and have been the third most penalized team. Considering the Leafs rely heavily on PP1 deployment, this should give Matthews a few cracks to record a point on the power play.

Maple Leafs vs Sharks same-game parlay (SGP)

Auston Matthews anytime goalscorer

Maple Leafs moneyline

This prop is 11-for-14 (78%) for Auston Matthews as he’s scored in nearly every meeting against the Sharks throughout his career, totaling 12 goals in 14 games.

Toronto has opened the scoring in eight of its last 12 games. Meanwhile, San Jose has allowed the first goal in 55% of its outings this season.

Not only are the Leafs the clear-cut better team, but Toronto is 27-8-2 after scoring the first goal. So it’s a pretty solid combo bet for an SGP.
