Oilers vs Ducks Odds, Picks, and Predictions Tonight: Ducks' Defense in Deep Water

The Oilers outlasted the defensively-sound Kings last night. Their reward? A date with the hapless Ducks. Our NHL betting picks expect Edmonton's offense to show little mercy vs. Anaheim.

The Edmonton Oilers come into tonight’s contest as the massive -400 favorite when they visit the Anaheim Ducks at Honda Center, fresh off a tight 3-1 victory over the Kings.

Edmonton will look to extend its point streak to 12 contests, while Anaheim seeks to snap an eight-game losing skid.

Keep reading to find out why the visitors are the clear favorites in our Oilers vs Ducks NHL picks and predictions for Wednesday, April 5.

Oilers vs Ducks picks and predictions

It was a hard-fought battle on Tuesday night, but the Oilers emerged victorious over the stingy Kings by a score of 3-1. It was an uncharacteristically low-scoring game for Edmonton, which had recorded 4.80 GPG in the 10 games prior.

Edmonton’s star combo of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl have taken over the NHL’s scoring race since the beginning of 2023, ranking first and second since Jan. 1 with 75 and 66 points, respectively.

McDavid, who sits on 147 points this season, is within reach of becoming the first player to post a 150-point campaign since Mario Lemieux in 1995-96. Meanwhile, Draisaitl’s 31 power-play goals are just three shy of Tim Kerr (34 in 1985-86) for the single-season record.

The Ducks, on the other hand, have been the NHL’s punching bag for most of this season, but their struggles have really piled up down the stretch. Anaheim is scoring 2.49 GPG — the second-worst mark in the league this year — and allowing 4.08 GAPG, which ranks dead last.

Those issues have remained apparent through this eight-game losing streak as the Ducks have been outscored 36-13 for an average score of 4.50-1.63. John Gibson was poor in March, posting an .893 SV% along with a 3.92 GAA. Lukas Dostal made just four appearances, but fared a bit better with a .912 SV% and a 3.28 GAA.

These two teams met just last Saturday, with the Oilers skating to a 6-0 victory. Draisaitl netted a hat trick, while McDavid added a goal and an assist. Given the way the clubs have been trending, I foresee another high-scoring blowout in favor of Edmonton, with the Oilers netting at least five goals.

Oilers vs Ducks moneyline analysis

Edmonton opened as the massive -400 favorite, and it’s hard to argue with the NHL odds makers on this one. The Oilers have been the NHL’s top team since the beginning of March with a record of 14-2-1, while the Ducks are the league’s second-worst club over that span, going 3-12-1.

The head-to-head edge clearly favors Edmonton as well, with the Oilers going 5-1 in the last six meetings overall, and 4-1 in their last five trips to Honda Center. The favorite generally does well in this matchup, too, winning five of the last six meetings.

While Tuesday’s contest between the Oilers and Kings was a battle between offensive and defensive strengths, tonight’s game is really just a one-way street that Edmonton should dominate. The Oilers own the league’s most potent offense, scoring just under 4.0 GPG, and the Ducks are the NHL’s worst defensive squad.

McDavid and Draisaitl have both cleaned up against Anaheim this year, too, recording six points each in three prior meetings.

Barring a meltdown from Jack Campbell in the Edmonton net, there’s really no reason to expect anything other than a straightforward Oilers win.

Oilers vs Ducks Over/Under analysis

The total for tonight’s game opened at 6.5 goals, with some books stretching as high as 7 or 7.5. While the Oilers are likely to score in bunches, the Ducks’ lack of offense could bring down the total score.

Anaheim has scored more than one goal just three times in its last eight games, with the Under going 6-2 over that span. Although the Ducks give up a ton of goals, they score so few that their games tend to finish with six goals or fewer. Anaheim has seen more than six total goals just three times in its last nine outings.

While the Oilers are an offensive powerhouse, they haven’t been cashing that many Overs of late. The Over has cashed just twice in Edmonton’s last seven contests, with four of those games featuring more than six total goals. Each of the Oilers’ last three contests have featured six goals or fewer.

I can definitely see Edmonton putting five or six pucks in the net, but even then it’s no guarantee that Anaheim generates enough offense to get the total to seven. That said, the Under seems like the play tonight.
