Connor McDavid has had no issue firing away for the Oilers this season, and he'll eclipse his shooting total again today.

The Edmonton Oilers host the Vegas Golden Knights in a marquee matinee between two of the NHL’s perennial contenders.

Although Vegas has won both meetings this season, my Golden Knights vs. Oilers predictions see Connor McDavid leading the way in a winning effort this time around.

Let’s take a closer look with my NHL picks for December 14.

Oilers vs Golden Knights prediction

My Oilers pick
Connor McDavid Over 3.5 shots (+105 at BET99)

My Oilers analysis
The Vegas Golden Knights enter play owning a sparkling 8-1-1 record over their last 10 games. While they have done a great job of keeping the puck out of their net, they haven’t been immune to putting a lot on the plate of their goaltenders.

The Golden Knights allowed 60.42 shot attempts per 60 minutes of 5-on-5 play over the last 10 games. That is the ninth-worst mark in the NHL, sandwiching them between the Montreal Canadiens and New York Islanders — not the company you want to be keeping.

Including all game states actually makes matters worse. Vegas has allowed the fifth most shot attempts per 60 minutes across all situations.

Plenty of the volume they’ve conceded has come from opposing centers, with only 11 teams allowing more shots per game to the position during this 10-game heater.

This all makes it favorable for the league’s best player to pile up the shots. Connor McDavid recently faced the Golden Knights and did manage to record four shots, a bar he’s cleared at a 58% rate this season.

McDavid has recorded at least four shots in six of the past 10 games. The Edmonton Oilers won each of the games he didn’t clear that benchmark by multiple goals, with three of the wins coming by margins of three or more.

Put another way, McDavid is often getting the job done — particularly when the games are remotely close. That should be the case in this one, as the Golden Knights lead the Pacific Division and sit just two points out of first place in the entire NHL.

Oilers vs Golden Knights same-game parlay (SGP)

Connor McDavid Over 3.5 shots

Zach Hyman Over 0.5 points

Oilers moneyline

Zach Hyman has performed at a very high level since returning from injury. He has four points spanning four games and is piling up the shots on a nightly basis, totalling 16 in aggregate.

He continues to ride shotgun with McDavid at 5-on-5 and on the top power-play unit. Be it digging in the corners to win pucks for McDavid or burying one of his rebounds, he has a strong chance of hitting the scoresheet if McDavid is as dangerous as usual offensively.

The Golden Knights are a great team, but they haven’t performed nearly as well on the road. They’ve won eight of 15 away games and most of those wins came against bottom-half teams in points percentage like the Ducks, Hockey Club, Canadiens and Flyers.

While one of the exceptions did come against the Edmonton Oilers, they led well into the third period before conceding three times in the final 10 minutes. I expect them to learn from their mistakes and get revenge this time around.
