The New York Rangers and Edmonton Oilers will face off for the first time this season, and whenever these two teams meet, it always seems to be an exciting battle.

This game should be very back-and-forth with a ton of offensively gifted players on both sides, and my Oilers vs. Rangers predictions expect them to surpass the total of 6.5.

Read all about it in my NHL picks for November 23.

My Oilers analysis
The Edmonton Oilers and New York Rangers are both coming off disappointing losses, and what both teams feel they can do a better job at is scoring more goals.

The Oilers have picked up their scoring since the early parts of the season: As a whole, they’re only averaging 2.76 goals per game, which is very light for a team with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

However, over November, Edmonton is scoring 3.10 goals over its last 10 games, but oddly enough, it's also allowing 3.10 goals against.

Goaltending has been the Oilers' biggest crutch this season, with both Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard’s save percentages below .900%. Skinner is skating to a .876 SV% while Pickard’s is slightly better at .893%.

Pickard is the expected starter tonight for Edmonton, while the Rangers have yet to announce who will be in the blue paint for them tonight. Both Igor Shesterkin and Jonathan Quick have been excellent between the pipes, but no matter who’s in goal tonight, they will get tested.

Edmonton is generating the fifth-most high-danger chances per 60, typically getting 12.7 per game. They also have the seventh most shots on goal per game (32). The Rangers aren’t too far off, as they have the seventh most high-danger chances, generating 12.62 per 60 while skating to the 10th most shots on goal per game (29.3).

On the defensive side of the puck, the Rangers give up a ton of chances and shots as well, so the Oilers need to focus on capitalizing on their opportunities. The Rangers allowed the third most shots against (32.7) and the fourth most high-danger chances against (12.84).

Oilers vs Rangers same-game parlay (SGP)

Over 6.5

Oilers moneyline

Leon Draisaitl 3+ shots on goal

The Rangers are playing their fourth game on the road in six nights, and despite what their record might show, this team has been incredibly inconsistent. The Oilers should control the pace for most of this contest.

Leon Draisaitl is averaging 2.67 shots on goal per game and has hit this mark in four of his last five contests. The Oilers have talked about wanting to score more goals and that all has to start with their best goal scorer. Look for Leon to be a bit more aggressive tonight.
