It’s another decent slate on the ice tonight with an octet of matches following yesterday’s profitable day.
Today, I'm looking at the shots market in Montreal, getting creative with the Nashville Predators' matchup, and finding the best double-double stack on the slate.
These are my three favorite NHL player props bets for Tuesday, January 21.
NHL prop picks and best bets for January 21
- Laine o2.5 SOG (-110 at bet365)
- Forsberg 4+ SOG + o0.5 points (+115 at bet365)
- / Thompson/Zucker + Boeser/Pettersson o0.5 points each (+625 at bet365)
Today’s NHL prop picks and best bets
Patrick Laine Over 2.5 shots on goal
Home/road splits are very surprising in the NHL. Top-end forwards seem to always have better numbers at home and that’s where I’m going tonight with Patrick Laine and the Montreal Canadiens.
The winger is averaging 3.1 shots per game at home vs. 2.25 on the road. It’s a massive difference. He also has 12 points across 10 games at the Bell Centre while recording just three points in eight road games.
The reason usually comes down to the last change that the home team gets and ensures a better matchup for the home side.
Laine is a decent -110 for 3+ shots today and has a rest advantage over the Tampa Bay Lightning, who played last night.
There should also be plenty of power-play time as Tampa's man-advantage unit can score and the Habs rank third over the last 30 days in shorthanded time per game. He has a shooting rate that is close to many guys with a SOG total of 3.5 and he is better at home.
Filip Forsberg 4+ SOG + Over 0.5 points
Sticking with splits, Filip Forsberg is another example of a guy who kills it at home but then falls short on the road. Over this season, he averages 4.0 SOG and 1.41 points per game at home compared to 3.04 SOG and just 0.48 points per game on the road.
The Nashville Predators have maybe the best matchup on the slate. The San Jose Sharks played an emotional game yesterday in Boston as half of the team is from there or played at Boston College. The return to Boston was the narrative in that 6-3 loss where they collapsed in the third. It will also be an Alex Georgiev start after Yaroslav Askarov played yesterday.
The best skater for the Preds is also in great form with goals in five straight and multi-points in 50% of his last 14 games. The 5+ SOG and 2+ points at +450 is also in my account at a half-unit.
Tage Thompson + Jason Zucker + Elias Pettersson + Brock Boeser Over 0.5 points each
It wouldn’t be a day without a good double-double stack, but those of us on the East Coast will have to stay up for it. The Buffalo Sabres were in Seattle last night and now will play the Vancouver Canucks tonight. The Nucks’ offense is stale but the Sabres could be rolling with goalie No.3 and are playing very good Over hockey, going 6-2-2 to the Over in their last 10.
Stacking both top lines is the way to go despite the second lines also looking good. Tage Thompson and Jason Zucker are the stack targets for the Sabres while I’m rolling with Elias Pettersson and Brock Boeser for the Canucks in a game that features two Bottom-10 GAA teams over the last 30 days.
Both sides play together at 5-on-5 and on PP1, which is the key correlation for the stack.
It’s a solid +625 double-double stack in a game that could be a sneaky Over.
