I’m coming off another profitable day on a high-volume slate, but today’s four-game card does not look like a great day to stack point props outside of the Blue Jackets vs. Maple Leafs game.
With the total on the rise, I’m taking two swings at point props in Toronto while riding the SOG trend vs. the Bruins in what could be a battle between New Jersey and Boston.
These are my three favorite NHL player props for Wednesday, January 22.
NHL prop picks and best bets for January 22
- Nylander + McMann o0.5 points each (+160 at bet365)
- K. Johnson o0.5 points (+115 at bet365)
- Hughes o3.5 SOG (-130 at BetRivers)
Today’s NHL prop picks and best bets
Bobby McMann + William Nylander Over 0.5 points each (+160 at bet365)
This is the only game where I like goals, and with the Toronto Maple Leafs going with Dennis Hildeby in net, two-way scoring is looking a lot better than if Joseph Woll were in net. This is an easy stack.
Both Bobby McMann and William Nylander are playing 5-on-5 together and on a power play that has four goals over its last three games. Nylander has goals in each of Toronto’s last three games, while this prop has hit in three straight.
If you can’t add these props together, take McMann for a point at even money. He should be priced at -140ish. His ice time is up nearly four minutes per game since the promotion and he is playing with a ton of confidence on the second line.
Kent Johnson Over 0.5 points (+115 at bet365)
With the confirmation of Hildeby in net for the Buds, the Columbus Blue Jackets’ projected team total has increased. I am a sucker for second-line players on the road as they get away from the most difficult matchup, but Kent Johnson also gets time on PP1 — the best of both worlds.
His point prop, which has hit in eight of his last 14 games, is a solid +115 tonight and is a buy to +105. I love the triple-stack of the top Columbus line, but on the road at +300 is not enough for an offense that scores a lot more at home.
One point prop at plus money is a simple route here in a game that has seen its total go from 6 to 6.5 after the Hildeby news. The Toronto penalty kill has also allowed six goals over its last four games, so there are multiple paths for a Johnson point tonight.
Jack Hughes Over 3.5 shots on goal (-130 at BetRivers)
The Boston Bruins have been giving up more shots on the net than any team lately. Just over their last seven games, they’ve allowed 28, 44, 45, 43, 30, 38, and 37 shots in consecutive games. Combine that with a New Jersey Devils team that has been losing thanks to a lack of goals, this could be a heavy shot-volume game from the home side.
This might not correlate to goals as there could be a get-puck-on-net mentality that can lead to low-danger shots, but New Jersey is a great target for shots today. My preferred angle would be a Boston goalie Over 27.5 saves at -115 or better, but at the time of writing, Jeremy Swayman has not been confirmed. So an afternoon pivot would be Devils SOG props.
My target here is Jack Hughes, to no surprise. He leads the team in all shooting metrics and only six other guys shoot the puck more than him. His Over 3.5 shots is a little pricey at -130, but he could smash this number with the way this injured Boston defense has held up of late.
SOG is not my favorite market as those shots can disappear, but the Bruins’ recent lack of shot-suppression is not fully priced in here.
