Today’s NHL Prop Picks and Best Bets: Can't Trust Kadri

Nazem Kadri and the Calgary Flames have been very inconsistent and the veteran forward is centering the club's second line to middling results. It's not entirely his fault but we're fading him against the Kraken as part of tonight's player prop picks.

Today’s NHL prop picks and best bets

Prop bet #1: More like Tommy YESvak

The Nashville Predators host the Carolina Hurricanes in a matchup that features two teams trending in opposite directions. Carolina has yet to find its typical form, sitting in fifth place in the Metropolitan Division after losing four of its final five games before the holiday break.

One of those losses came against Nashville, a team that has won 14 of its past 19 games. Balanced play has led to this success, with strong performances in all three zones as well as in the crease.

At 5-on-5, the Preds rank 11th in the league in expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF/60). Part of this success is due to Tommy Novak, who centers the second line and acts as the facilitator for Yakov Trenin and Luke Evangelista.

He has recorded an assist in three of his past five games, including the matchup against the Canes. This success could continue against goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov, who is slated to start between the pipes on Wednesday.

It has been an incredibly inconsistent campaign for Kochetkov, who is 7-7-3 with a .894 SV%. He is coming off a particularly poor outing against the New York Islanders, a game in which he surrendered five goals on 28 shots for a mere .821 SV%.

Tommy Novak prop: Over 0.5 points (+130 at Bet99)

Prop bet #2: Storm stayed

Sticking with the same game, we are going to fade Carolina forward Sebastian Aho. While Aho is certainly not the issue with the Hurricanes offense, he has started to show a reluctance to shoot the puck with just one shot on goal in each of the past two losses before the break.

However, more than anything, this play is a backing of Nashville’s two-way play and excellent goaltending. At 5-on-5, the Preds rank in the top half of the league in expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA/60).

Backing up this strong two-way team is goaltender Juuse Saros, who continues to play as one of the world’s best netminders. Through 27 starts this season, Saros is 15-12 with a .909 SV%.

Entering this contest in particularly dominant form, he is 7-2 with a commanding .933 SV% over his past nine starts. This success is likely to continue against Carolina, a team Saros is 3-2 against with a .945 SV% over his past five regular season starts.

Aho failed to record a point in three of those five outings.

Sebastian Aho prop: Under 0.5 points (+135 at Bet99)

Prop bet #3: Kadri extinguished

We are going to fade another forward as the Calgary Flames host the Seattle Kraken. Oddsmakers are suggesting we could see a low-scoring affair in this matchup, with the total set at 5.5.

The main reason for this low total is how terrific Seattle has been playing defensively. At 5-on-5, it ranks second in the league in xGA/60.

Backing up this strong defensive lineup is goaltender Joey Daccord, who has taken advantage of this opportunity to post strong results. Through 21 appearances in the crease, Daccord boasts a .912 SV% and 2.53 GAA.

Like Saros, Daccord enters this contest in tremendous form at 4-0-2 with a .947 SV% and 1.64 GAA over his past six starts. That brings us to Calgary forward Nazem Kadri, who has failed to record a point in three of his past five games.

Not that these results are necessarily his fault, but Kadri is currently in a tough spot as he is centering a line between Connor Zary and Martin Pospisil. Zary is a solid player but still developing, while Pospisil has recorded just two points over his past 15 games.

Nazem Kadri prop: Under 0.5 points (+110 at Bet99)
