The Blues have been playing better hockey of late, and our NHL picks expect that to be the difference against a slumping Rangers squad.

The New York Rangers have been a complete disaster over the past month or so. In their last 12 games, they are 3-9 and have been the worst team in the NHL.

The St. Louis Blues have lost two straight games but have been playing much better hockey since Jim Montgomery took over. Coincidentally, his first game as the Blues bench boss came against the Rangers on November 25, which is when everything started going off the deep end for New York.

My Rangers vs. Blues predictions expect St. Louis to make rock bottom even deeper for New York. Find out why in my NHL  picks below.

My analysis
It’s pretty surprising to see the New York Rangers as the favorites in this game, considering the way they've played over the last month.

The St. Louis Blues are still seeking consistency, but their play has been mostly positive over their last nine games. They are 5-2-2 since Montgomery took over, and tonight, they have an opportunity to improve that record against a fragile Rangers group.

Jordan Binnington was the Blues starter last night against Dallas, so the signs point toward Joel Hofer getting the nod in goal tonight. Hofer has won his last three starts, including a win against the Rangers, where he stopped 27 shots and logged a .931 SV%.

Jonathan Quick is the expected starter for the Rangers after Igor Shesterkin was pulled from yesterday's game. Shesterkin allowed five goals against 21 shots, skating to a .762 SV% before getting the hook. Quick came in during the second period and put on a solid performance, stopping all 11 shots he faced.

That said, Quick’s numbers have not been very positive as of late. In his last four games, he has a .850 SV% with a 4.26 GAA. This Rangers defense has been struggling and is hanging its goaltenders out to dry.

The Blues have been getting some key offensive contributions over their past nine contests. In this span, Robert Thomas, Dylan Holloway, and Pavel Buchnevich have been producing at a point per game or better. Thomas has four goals with eight assists, Holloway has added six goals and five helpers, and Buchnevich has tallied two goals with five assists (they only played in seven of those nine games).

In their last 12 games, the Rangers have only been scoring 2.42 goals per game but have allowed 3.92 goals against. In that span, they've been outscored 47-29.

Jordan Kyrou 3+ shots

These teams have struggled to score goals as of late, with both teams averaging fewer than three goals per game.

Hofer has been solid in his recent starts, and the Rangers have only scored five goals in their last three games. The Blues will get their chances tonight since the Rangers are the worst team at defending against the rush, but St. Louis will have to bear down and finish on their chances.

Jordan Kyrou has scored goals in three straight games, and he always seems to play his best hockey against the Rangers. He's played against New York seven times and has tallied five goals and four assists with 19 shots on goal in those games.

He's averaging 2.90 shots on goal per game and will get plenty of looks tonight, considering the Rangers have allowed 32.8 shots against in their last 12 games, the most in the NHL in that span.
