Senators vs Islanders Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game

The Ottawa Senators were dealt a tough schedule over the holidays, but a pair of wins in their most recent games has the team feeling rejuvenated. Find out why Neil Parker is backing them to make it three in a row on Tuesday vs. the Islanders.

The Ottawa Senators have won consecutive games and head to UBS Arena to face the New York Islanders on Tuesday, January 14.

A tough schedule around the holiday break was a minor setback for Ottawa, but my top Senators vs. Islanders predictions and NHL picks expect the Sens to top the Isles to make it three wins in a row tonight.

My Senators analysis

The Ottawa Senators have won consecutive games, and backup goalie Leevi Merilainen has been up to the task when called upon with a rock-solid .913 save percentage, 2.34 GAA, and 1.83 goals saved above average across his six appearances.

Ottawa has the superior special teams and five-on-five possession numbers compared to the New York Islanders, and New York has multiple injured defensemen and an unsustainably high .923 team save percentage at 5-on-5.

Senators  Senators Islanders  Islanders
5-on-5 Corsi For % 51.4% (10th) 49.2% (17th)
5-on-5 shot share 52.4% (9th) 49.4% (17th)
5-on-5 team save % .906 (22nd) .923 (5th)
Power play % 24.1% (10th) 10.6% (32nd)
Penalty kill % 78.4% (18th) 65.2% (32nd)

I also think we’re landing a fair price on the underdog Sens because of how daunting their schedule has been. Ottawa has played eight of its last 11 games on the road, including nine straight bookending the holiday pause.

As a result, going 1-4-4 out of the holiday break before winning the past two carries far less weight for me. Additionally, rolling over the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-0 on the road Saturday, and then returning home to beat the Dallas Stars 3-2 at Canada Tire Centre on Sunday is impressive.

On the flip side, New York is being given a lot of credit for winning three straight on the road. Puck luck was kind, with the Isles posting a 103.6 PDO at 5-on-5 and an overall 106.1 mark. Statistical correction looms.

Remember, Ottawa was also on a 10-3-1 heater leading into the pause, and I think they are in the beginning stages of another surge.

Senators vs Islanders odds analysis

Obviously, I think New York is receiving too much credit ahead of this matchup, especially considering the Isles have only won 38 of their past 88 games. I wouldn’t be surprised if Ottawa wasn’t the betting favorite by puck drop.

Both teams have trended to the Under, with Ottawa going Under the number or pushing in nine straight, while New York has hit the Under in five of its past six. The Sens have also hit the Under in 31 of their last 47 away games (+17.25 Units / 33% ROI).
