A 2-1 defeat in the CONCACAF Champions Cup to Liga MX side Monterrey on Wednesday night has Tata Martino in a tricky spot. With Lionel Messi back in the match squad, he must balance their desire to win with keeping players fit for the important return leg to Mexico this Wednesday.  

Since conceding four goals on less than 1.0 xG in their opener to Portland, we’ve seen a strong response from Colorado. They’ve picked up results in their ensuing two away matches, and last week stormed back to defeat LAFC 3-2 at home.

This match is a tricky one to find value from, given the uncertainty of Lionel Messi’s availability and the juice often tied to Inter Miami’s matches. Thankfully, we’re getting -113 odds for both teams to score with three or more goals on the day, and we’ll take it for our best bet on Saturday. 

Colorado loves to attack down their right-hand side, which is how Monterrey hurt Inter Miami midweek. Djordje Mihailovic provides the Rapids with a target forward, and it was his pair of goals in the final 10 minutes that saw them claim victory against LAFC.

With Jordi Alba committed to attack for Inter Miami, that side of the pitch should present the Rapids with an opportunity to score. It’s how Monterrey got the winning goal as Maximiliano Meza was able to exploit the space behind the Spanish fullback.

Colorado has conceded six goals in three away matches despite an xGA of just 3.0 but four of those came in the season opener. Since then, they’ve drawn 1-1 with the Sounders and won 2-1 at Real Salt Lake. Factor in their three home matches, and only their 1-0 defeat to Houston failed to see both teams scoring on the day.

This season has been bountiful for Over bettors when it comes to Inter Miami. Including their CONCACAF Champions Cup outings, the Herons have seen at least three goals scored in seven of their last eight matches. Only their draw last weekend against NYCFC, a 1-1 result, saw the scoreline stay lower. And that was a match where both sides were missing their best player.

It’s been seven matches on the trot without a clean sheet for the Herons, and the injury issues they’ve had across the pitch are causing continuous rotation. That makes it tough for them to build the defensive chemistry needed to prevent their goal from getting peppered, having conceded the second-most shots in the league so far. 

With an eye on Monterrey and Messi’s health, I anticipate more rotation on Saturday. That’ll give Colorado an opportunity to get at least one, and Miami have the firepower with Alba and Luis Suarez to find goals of their own. This match should have plenty of chances at both ends, and that will help put money in our pockets.

Lionel Messi is named on the team sheet that came out Friday night, but it’s unknown whether he will play at all. He’s unlikely to start, making his player props null and void.

If he does start, I doubt he plays more than a half. That makes his goal price of -105 or worse a poor prop to play. Until he’s fully fit and his status is clearer, I’d avoid all Messi props as none of them offer any value.

In addition, we’re backing the Rapids to get a result here. Inter Miami knows that Wednesday night is the match that matters, and if Messi plays at all I expect it to be a cameo.

Miami is favored to win with -118 the best price on offer via the 3-way moneyline. Colorado’s getting +310 to win, with the draw paying up to +280. However, Miami were priced as high as -161 before the Monterrey defeat, when Messi was expected to return. Colorado has been priced at high as +400.

I think Colorado has a good chance to get a result here. Miami have won just two of their 12 matches without Messi on the pitch since he joined the club, and I honestly am not sure he plays a single minute. The Rapids are playing strong defensively, and if Miami throws numbers forward it could cost them. 

We’ve already discussed our stance on the total, but those looking to bet it straight-up will find heavy juice on the Over. The best price for three goals or more is -150, and you’ll have to go up to the Asian total of 2.75 to make it reasonable.
