With the race for the top four entering the final bend, the pressure gets cranked up another notch on Sunday as Newcastle and Tottenham collide at St. James’ Park.

Both teams are coming off poor outings last weekend that opened the door for the chasing pack. The Magpies saw their winning run snapped after being outclassed by Aston Villa in a 3-0 loss that featured some of their worst defending of the season.

Tottenham, who enter this matchup three points behind the hosts and have played a game more, stumbled to a shock 3-2 loss at home to Bournemouth last Saturday — and there are no guarantees that they’ll hang onto a Top-6 spot with the standings so tight.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham picks and predictions

It says a lot about Newcastle’s rapid rise that last weekend’s loss away to in-form Villa was met with such surprise. But that reaction also makes total sense — Eddie Howe’s men had won five straight games before that no-show, including big wins over Manchester United and Brentford.

So, count me as more surprised than alarmed when it comes to the Magpies. I have bigger concerns over Tottenham’s last-gasp loss to Bournemouth than I do over Newcastle’s setback — and I see the hosts bouncing back in a big way here.

After three straight games on the road, Newcastle return to St. James Park where they’ve won their last two games and have only lost once in the league all season. They’ve conceded just nine goals in 14 games on home turf.

Meanwhile, Tottenham’s wretched away form feels like the key storyline heading into Sunday’s battle. The visitors haven’t won on their travels in any competition since a 3-0 victory over Preston North End in the FA Cup in late January – and, with the exception of a 3-3 draw against Southampton last month, they’ve struggled to create scoring chances.

Newcastle got the better of Tottenham in their earlier meeting this season in a 2-1 victory - and I’m talking these odds for the home side to snatch all three points this weekend.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham side analysis

This is a huge game in the race for fourth place, and it should be played in a cauldron of noise at St James’ Park. Newcastle are clear favorites and I’ve already jumped on board with the hosts above. With a chance to create real breathing room ahead of Tottenham, Brighton and Liverpool, I expect a response after the loss to Villa.

Howe choose to play Alexander Isak as the central striker in his 4-3-3 formation last weekend, as the Magpies served up just two shots on target. Against a probable Tottenham back three here, this could be a timely moment to start Isak and Callum Wilson together and get a closer look at that potential partnership.

Manager-less Tottenham have a big summer ahead and the loss to Bournemouth made it one win from their last four games. I see this being another tough away day for interim boss Cristian Stellini, especially with the steady flow of rumors linking Harry Kane with a move away from the club in the offseason.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Over/Under analysis

A big game with big stakes should bring out the best of the headline acts on Sunday. Kane is closing in on a 25-goal campaign, Son has scored in his last two games, while Newcastle have options in attack with Isak and/or Wilson, plus a fit-again Miguel Almiron out wide.

One look at the Premier League table confirms that neither team is likely to sit back and settle for a draw — and I expect good chances at both ends and a high-tempo game.

That makes the BTTS odds worth a long look, but Tottenham’s struggles to score consistently on the road make me a little nervous. The visitors have either scored one goal or been shut out in five of their last six away games.

At the other end of the field, neither team looked comfortable defensively last time out. But that feels more fixable for a Newcastle defense that’s been rock solid at home. By contrast, no team in the top half of the table has conceded more league goals than Tottenham this season.
