NEW YORK -- Jay Bruce collected three RBIs off a pair of long doubles Saturday night as the surging New York Mets routed the Miami Marlins, 11-3, at Citi Field.
The Mets (14-15) have won three in a row and six of their last eight. The Marlins (12-17) have lost three straight and nine of their last 11.
Bruce had an RBI double during a five-run first inning and capped the Mets' scoring with a two-run double in the seventh. Asdrubal Cabrera, Jose Reyes, Kevin Plawecki and Michael Conforto all collected RBIs in the first while T.J. Rivera had a run-scoring single in the fifth, when Conforto drew his second bases-loaded walk. Wilmer Flores notched an RBI off a fielder's choice grounder in the seventh.
The win may have been a costly one for the Mets, who lost Cabrera to a left thumb injury in the third inning. X-rays were negative but he is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Sunday,
Right-hander Robert Gsellman (2-2) earned the win after allowing three runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out two over five innings.
Giancarlo Stanton hit a solo homer and Marcell Ozuna laced a two-run shot for the Marlins, who received three hits from J.T. Realmuto.
Right-hander Odrisamer Despaigne took the loss in his season debut after giving up eight runs (three earned) on five hits and four walks while striking out four over 4 2/3 innings.
The Mets sent 11 batters to the plate during a five-run first inning that began when Marlins first baseman Justin Bour misplayed a routine grounder by Conforto, who promptly scored on a double by Cabrera. Bruce followed with an RBI double to score Cabrera.
Bruce advanced to third on a groundout by Neil Walker before Despaigne walked Curtis Granderson and plunked Rivera. Reyes followed with an RBI single and Plawecki lofted a sacrifice fly to extend the Mets' lead to 4-0. Despaigne then walked Gsellman to load the bases and walked Conforto to force home Rivera.
The Marlins chipped away in the second when Stanton hit a long leadoff homer and in the fifth as Ozuna launched a two-run homer to left to close the gap to 5-3.
Despaigne set down 11 straight batters following Conforto's walk before giving up a one-out double to Walker in the fifth. After a Granderson walk, Rivera delivered an RBI single. Granderson and Rivera each advanced a base on a two-out error by Martin Prado, which chased Despaigne, and Granderson scored on a passed ball. Conforto then drew his second bases-loaded walk, this one against Dustin McGowan, to extend the lead to 8-3.
NOTES: Mets RHP Noah Syndergaard (lat) said he can't throw for six weeks after being injured last Sunday. ... Marlins CF Christian Yelich (hamstring) did not play but is expected to return to the lineup Sunday.
