NEW YORK -- Michael Conforto hit two homers Tuesday night, including a leadoff homer that sparked a seven-run first inning, as the New York Mets cruised past the San Diego Padres 9-3 at Citi Field.
The Mets (19-24) have won three of four. The Padres (16-31) have lost six of seven.
Conforto capped the first inning with a two-run single off Padres starter Jhoulys Chacin (4-4) and added a solo homer in the fourth. He is batting .333 with 13 homers and 31 RBIs this season, including .323 with 10 homers and 20 RBIs in 25 starts out of the leadoff spot.
Curtis Granderson (sacrifice fly), Wilmer Flores (RBI single) and Lucas Duda (two-run double) added run-scoring hits in the first. Duda capped the scoring with an RBI single in the seventh.
Right-hander Matt Harvey (3-3) earned the win after allowing two runs on three hits and four walks while striking out six over five innings.
Cory Spangenberg and Austin Hedges had run-scoring groundouts in the second while Ryan Schimpf homered leading off the sixth for the Padres.
Chacin lasted just two-thirds of an inning and allowed all seven runs on eight hits. He didn't record a walk or a strikeout.
Chacin's nightmarish outing began with a 10-pitch at-bat against Conforto, who won the battle by homering to right. The Mets loaded the bases with three straight singles before Granderson's sacrifice fly. Flores followed with an RBI single in between first and second base, after which Duda laced a two-run double to the wall in left-center field.
Duda advanced to third on a single by Rivera, after which Harvey grounded out. Conforto then chased Chacin with a two-run single to left. He is the first Mets leadoff batter to ever collect three RBIs in the first inning of a game.
The Padres scored twice in the second, when Schimpf led off with a walk and went to third on a double by Hunter Renfroe. Spangenberg and Hedges followed with run-scoring groundouts.
Conforto homered again in the fourth to extend the Mets' lead to 8-2.
