NEW YORK -- Eric Thames continued snapping out of his slump Wednesday night when he reached base four times in five plate appearances and hit a two-run homer in the first inning that launched the Milwaukee Brewers to a 7-1 victory over the New York Mets at Citi Field.
The Brewers (28-25) won for only the third time in 10 games. The Mets (23-28) had a three-game winning streak snapped.
Thames, who broke an 0-for-19 skid Tuesday, finished 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs. He has reached base eight times in 11 plate appearances in the past two games.
Keon Broxton homered in the second inning for the Brewers while Jesus Aguilar (run-scoring double), Hernan Perez (two-run single) and Manny Pina (run-scoring groundout) all collected RBIs in the fourth inning.
Travis Shaw had two hits while Eric Sogard continued to display an uncanny knack for getting on base by going 1-for-2 with three walks and two runs. Sogard has drawn 13 walks and struck out just twice in 15 games this season.
Right-hander Junior Guerra (1-0) cruised to the win by allowing four hits and three walks while striking out four over six shutout innings.
The Mets scored their lone run with two outs in the ninth, when Juan Lagares singled and scored on Michael Conforto's double off Rob Scahill. Curtis Granderson had two hits and a walk.
New York right-hander Jacob deGrom (4-2) allowed seven runs on eight hits and five walks while striking out six over four innings. It was the third time in 87 big league starts deGrom allowed at least seven runs and only the fourth time he has lasted four innings or fewer.
The Brewers wasted no time piling on deGrom. Sogard drew a leadoff walk in the first and Thames followed with a two-run homer, his first round-tripper since May 9.
Broxton homered leading off the second to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Brewers stranded two in a scoreless third but ended deGrom's night by scoring four times in the fourth, when five straight batters reached with one out.
