MIAMI -- A.J. Ellis fouled off 10 pitches before driving home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, leading the Miami Marlins to a 6-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday afternoon at Marlins Park.
Tyler Moore hit a three-run homer as the Marlins (24-31) won their third consecutive series. They have also won seven of their past eight games and closed out an 8-2 homestand.
Arizona (34-25) had won three straight games before losing the final three games of the series. The Diamondbacks, who were 5-6 on their road trip, got two doubles and two RBIs from Daniel Descalso and a double, a single and two RBIs from Paul Goldschmidt.
Miami used six relievers in place of ineffective starter Vance Worley, including Nick Wittgren (1-0), who picked up the win by pitching two-thirds of an inning. AJ Ramos posted his eighth save of the season.
Braden Shipley (0-2) took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) in five innings.
Arizona opened the scoring in the first inning. One day after getting no-hit by Miami's Edinson Volquez, the Diamondbacks got a hit on their first opportunity. Descalso led off with a double, moved to third on a flyout and scored on single by Goldschmidt.
Miami took a 3-1 lead in the second on Moore's three-run homer.
The rally was set up by a leadoff walk by Marcell Ozuna. Derek Dietrich then hit a grounder to Goldschmidt, who threw to second to try to get a force and start a double play. Instead, the throw sailed high, into left field, for an error. Moore followed with his second of homer of the season.
Arizona cut its deficit to 3-2 in the third. Goldschmidt drew a one-out walk, advanced to third on a Jake Lamb double and scored on a groundout by Chris Owings.
Miami got the run back in the bottom of the inning. Christian Yelich hit a leadoff single, advanced to third when Ozuna doubled off the wall in center and scored on Dietrich's sacrifice fly.
Arizona took a 5-4 lead in the fourth. Nick Ahmed drew a leadoff walk and Rey Fuentes singled. Both runners scored on Descalso's double to right. Descalso came home on Goldschmidt's double to left-center field that missed being a homer by inches.
Miami tied the score in the fifth. Giancarlo Stanton led off with a double, advanced to third on a flyout and scored on another Dietrich sacrifice fly.
The Marlins grabbed a 6-5 lead in the seventh. Dietrich doubled and scored on a two-out single by Ellis against hard-throwing reliever Archie Bradley. It was a 14-pitch at-bat. Of the 10 foul balls, nine came on fastballs ranging from 96 to 100 mph.
