NEW YORK -- Rookie catcher Elias Diaz, a last-second addition to the lineup, collected six RBIs Friday night as the Pittsburgh outslugged the New York Mets 12-7 at Citi Field.
The Pirates (25-30) snapped a two-game losing streak. The Mets (23-30) have lost three straight.
Diaz was inserted into the lineup about 30 minutes before game time in place of Francisco Cervelli, who was scratched due to illness. The 26-year-old, who entered Friday with just two hits in 18 at-bats dating to 2015, went 2-for-5 with a three-run double in the fourth and a three-run homer in the sixth that fueled a seven-run inning.
The outburst occurred immediately after the Mets scored five runs in their half of the fifth to take a 7-4 lead.
Josh Bell led off the sixth with a homer and added a bases-loaded walk later in the frame. Josh Harrison had an RBI double in the sixth and Andrew McCutchen lofted a sacrifice fly.
Harrison homered leading off the eighth. David Freese opened the scoring for the Pirates with a run-scoring fielder's choice in the first.
Gerrit Cole (3-5) appeared to be in line for the loss after the fifth but earned the win despite giving up seven runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out six over five innings.
Lucas Duda hit two homers -- a two-run shot in the second and a solo blast in the fifth -- for the Mets. Michael Conforto laced a two-run homer in the fifth, when Neil Walker delivered an RBI triple and scored on a wild pitch.
Paul Sewald (0-1) took the loss after giving up five runs while recording just one out in the sixth. He relieved starter Matt Harvey, who blew a pair of leads in giving up six runs on five hits and four walks while striking out five over five-plus innings.
