NEW YORK -- Robert Gsellman tossed seven strong innings Monday afternoon and helped his cause with two RBIs as the New York Mets beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2 at Citi Field.
The Mets (22-27) have won two straight and three of four. The Brewers (27-24) have lost six of eight.
Gsellman, who likely will lose his spot in the rotation when right-hander Seth Lugo and left-hander Steven Matz return from the disabled list in early June, allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks while striking out five. The two runs were the fewest Gsellman (3-3) has allowed in nine starts this year, while the seven innings equaled a season high.
Paul Sewald threw a perfect eighth inning. Addison Reed allowed back-to-back singles to start the ninth before recovering to earn his seventh save with a scoreless inning.
Gsellman contributed to both of the Mets' run-scoring rallies by lofting a sacrifice fly during a three-run fifth and drawing a bases-loaded walk in the sixth.
Rene Rivera and Michael Conforto each had RBI doubles for New York in the fifth, while Wilmer Flores had three singles.
Milwaukee's Keon Broxton had an RBI groundout in the fifth, while Domingo Santana delivered two hits, including a solo homer in the sixth.
Right-hander Matt Garza (2-2) took the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four over 5 2/3 innings.
NOTES: Mets GM Sandy Alderson said both RHP Seth Lugo (right elbow) and LHP Steven Matz (left elbow) will make one more rehab start apiece before being activated. Lugo allowed three runs over six innings for Double-A Binghamton on Sunday, while Matz threw five perfect innings for Triple-A Las Vegas. ... Mets rookie RHP Tyler Pill will make his first major league start Tuesday night. ... Brewers LF Eric Thames returned to the lineup but went 0-for-3 with a walk and is 0-for-15 dating back to Friday. ... Injured Brewers LF Ryan Braun (left calf strain), who was placed on the 10-day disabled list Friday, has yet to resume any physical activities.
