CLEVELAND -- Cory Spangenberg homered, and Jose Pirela and Carlos Asuaje had three hits apiece as the San Diego Padres beat the Cleveland Indians 6-2 on Wednesday night at Progressive Field.
San Diego has won the first two contests of the three-game series as Cleveland continues to struggle at home and in interleague action. Despite being in first place in the American League Central, the Indians (44-39) are 18-23 at Progressive Field and 2-11 in interleague play.
San Diego starter Luis Perdomo (4-4) lasted five innings, giving up two runs (one earned) and nine hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Cleveland starter Trevor Bauer (7-7) pitched five-plus innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.
Francisco Lindor and Abraham Almonte each had three hits for the Indians.
The Padres increased their lead to 4-2 in the sixth inning when they knocked Bauer out of the game. Erick Aybar led off with a single and went to third on a single by Matt Szczur. Asuaje made it three singles in a row, driving in Aybar and chasing Bauer.
The Padres (36-48) added two runs in the seventh inning. Wil Myers led off with a double off reliever Nick Goody. Goody struck out Hunter Renfroe, then gave way to Zach McAllister, who surrendered a two-run homer to the first batter he faced, Spangenberg, to make it 6-2.
Cleveland, which was shut out and went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position in the series opener Tuesday, had doubles in each of the first two innings against Perdomo but failed to score.
In the third inning, Erik Gonzalez led off with an infield single, and when third baseman Spangenberg fielded the ball and threw wildly to first for an error, Gonzalez went to second.
Bradley Zimmer grounded out to second, moving Gonzalez to third. Lindor followed with a single to center field, scoring Gonzalez with the first run of the game. It snapped the Indians' streak of 14 scoreless innings.
San Diego tied it with a fourth-inning rally that began when Bauer hit Aybar with a pitch with one out. Aybar went to second on a groundout by Szczur and scored on a two-out single by Asuaje.
The Padres took the lead in the fifth inning. Luis Torrens led off with a single and scored on a triple off the center field wall by Pirela. Manuel Margot flied out to right. Myers struck out for the second out, but Renfroe hit a line drive directly to shortstop Lindor. The ball glanced off Lindor's glove and into left field for an error, scoring Pirela and giving San Diego a 3-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Gonzalez led off with a double into the left field corner. A groundout by Zimmer moved Gonzalez to third. Lindor hit a line drive off Perdomo's leg. The ball ricocheted into right field for a double, scoring Gonzalez and cutting the San Diego lead to 3-2.
Michael Brantley hit a line drive off Perdomo's hip for an infield single, moving Lindor to third. However, with runners at first and third and one out, Edwin Encarnacion grounded into an inning-ending double play.
