NEW YORK -- Jacob deGrom won his seventh consecutive start Wednesday night, tossing 6 2/3 strong innings to lead the New York Mets to a 7-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at Citi Field.
The Mets (42-50) snapped a three-game losing streak. The Cardinals (46-48) were trying to reach .500 for the first time since June 2.
DeGrom (11-3) threw 25 pitches in the first inning but settled down to allow one run on seven hits and one walk while striking out three. He has a 1.51 ERA in his past seven starts, a stretch in which he has struck out 50 and walked 10.
DeGrom briefly appeared to have thrown seven shutout innings -- it would have been the seventh straight start in which he threw at least seven innings -- when plate umpire David Rackley ruled Luke Voit swung at strike three. However, first base umpire Joe West overturned the call, saying Voit fouled the pitch off, and Voit laced an RBI double to left four pitches later to end deGrom's night.
The Cardinals pulled within 7-3 in the eighth on Magneuris Sierra's third hit, a two-run single. However, Addison Reed entered with two outs and the bases loaded and threw the final 1 1/3 innings to earn his 16th save.
The Mets scored all their runs in the first two innings against Cardinals right-hander Mike Leake (6-8). Yoenis Cespedes had an RBI single in the first and an RBI double in the second, while Lucas Duda (double), Wilmer Flores (single), Jay Bruce (single) and Jose Reyes (two-run single) also had run-scoring hits.
Leake allowed seven runs (four earned), 10 hits and one walk while striking out none over two innings -- his third-shortest stint in 221 big league starts.
The Mets strung together four straight two-out hits in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead.
Thanks to an error by Jedd Gyorko, the Mets batted around during a four-run second.
Leake induced Cabrera to hit into what looked like an inning-ending double play, but Gyorko's throw to second sailed into right field. Bruce and Cespedes followed with run-scoring hits.
Duda was intentionally walked and Flores flied out to right, but Reyes extended the lead to 7-0 with a two-run single.
