PITTSBURGH -- Competing in the ultra-challenging National League West, the San Diego Padres were long eliminated from postseason contention. But the Padres are young and improving. And mostly anonymous.
Their best-known player, Wil Myers, drove in three runs with a double and home run Saturday against the Pittsburgh Pirates while two of his not-so-famous teammates, both rookies, also came up large.
Beating the Pirates for the second time in a week, right-hander Dinelson Lamet gave up one hit in 5 2/3 shutout innings, and shortstop Dusty Coleman hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning in a 5-2 Padres' victory at PNC Park.
Lamet (6-4) held the Pirates hitless until Josh Bell singled in the fourth inning with Andrew McCutchen, who walked, on first base. Josh Harrison flied out weakly to end the threat.
Pirates right-hander Gerrit Cole (9-8) gave up three runs and eight hits in six innings. He walked two and struck out five.
The Padres led, 3-0, when Lamet walked Adam Frazier and McCutchen with two outs in the sixth. Right-hander Phil Maton relieved and got Bell to fly out to short right field.
Harrison led off the seventh against Maton with his 12th homer of the season, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
Singles by Francisco Cervelli and David Freese and a walk issued to Starling Marte loaded the bases with two outs. Left-hander Buddy Baumann replaced Maton and Frazier singled to make it 3-2. With the bases still loaded, Craig Stammen came in and retired McCutchen on a pop fly.
Hunter Renfroe singled to start the eighth and Coleman followed with his third homer of the season.
Brad Hand earned his eighth save.
NOTES: The Pirates acquired IF/OF Sean Rodriguez from Atlanta for minor league IF Connor Joe. Rodriguez hit .270 with 18 homers and RBI for the Pirates last season before signing a free-agent contract with the Braves. He suffered an injured left rotator cuff in a car crash in January and did not make his 2017 debut until July 18. In 15 games, he was 6-for-37 with two home runs. ... The Pirates also acquired RHP George Kontos on waivers from the Giants. Kontos is 0-5 with a 3.83 ERA in 50 relief appearances. To make room on the 40-man roster, OF Danny Ortiz and RHP Jhan Marinez were designated for assignment. ... After beating the Pirates, RHP Dinelson Lamet has yielded three earned runs or less in eight of his 12 starts.
