NEW YORK -- Seth Lugo threw six scoreless innings Friday night and Jose Reyes hit a pair of homers as the New York Mets beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-1 at Citi Field.
The Mets (62-79) have won the first two contests of the four-game series from the Reds (61-81), who are ensured of their fourth straight non-winning season.
Lugo (6-4), who entered Friday with an 0-2 mark and a 6.93 ERA in his previous five starts, allowed four hits and one walk while striking out four in the longest scoreless outing of his two-year big league career.
Four relievers combined to finish the nine-hitter. A.J. Ramos inherited a bases-loaded jam in the ninth and recorded the final two outs, including a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Zack Cozart, to earn his 27th save and his seventh since the Mets acquired him from the Miami Marlins on July 28.
Travis Taijeron hit his first major league homer leading off the second for the Mets. Reyes belted a one-out homer in the third and drilled a two-run shot in the fifth to score Lugo, who singled. It was the second two-homer game of the season for Reyes and the 10th of his career.
The Mets scored their final run in the sixth, when Travis d'Arnaud doubled, went to third on Taijeron's long double and scored when second baseman Scooter Gennett's throw home on a grounder by Matt Reynolds drew catcher Tucker Barnhart off the plate.
Joey Votto had two singles and a walk for the Reds while Gennett and Barnhart each had two singles.
Rookie left-hander Amir Garrett (3-7), making his first major league start since June 20, took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five over five innings.
NOTES: The Mets selected the contract of INF Phillip Evans from Triple-A Las Vegas. Evans, making his major league debut, lined into a double play as a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning. To make room for Evans on the 40-man roster, the Mets shifted LHP Steven Matz (left elbow) from the 10-day to the 60-day disabled list. ... Mets INF Asdrubal Cabrera (glute) did not play, one night after he was injured fielding a ground ball. ... Reds RHP Anthony DeSclafani (right elbow) threw 60-65 pitches between the bullpen and batting practice. DeSclafani has yet to pitch in the majors this season. ... Reds RF Jesse Winker (left hip) fielded balls in the outfield and could be activated from the 10-day disabled list next week.
