MILWAUKEE -- Domingo Santana hit a three-run homer, and Stephen Vogt doubled three times and scored two runs to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 7-6 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night at Miller Park.
The Brewers remain 1 1/2 games behind the Colorado Rockies in the race for the second National League wild card.
Santana went deep for the 29th time this season as the Brewers combined for 10 hits. It helped make up for a short outing from Milwaukee starter Zach Davies, who was charged with three runs, six hits and two walks in four-plus innings.
The Reds finished with 11 hits, including homers from Scott Schebler, Zack Cozart and Jesse Winker, but Deck McGuire (0-1) lasted only three innings in his first big league start. He allowed six runs (four earned), six hits and two walks while walking five.
McGuire's starting debut got ugly fast. He gave up a leadoff double to Eric Thames, walked Neil Walker and struck out the next two batters, but he hung a 2-2 slider that Santana hit to left-center field to give Milwaukee a 3-0 lead.
The Brewers added a run on back-to-back doubles by Orlando Arcia and Brett Phillips before McGuire got out of the inning.
Schebler cut the deficit in half in the second with a two-run homer to right, but the Brewers got those runs back in the third when Travis Shaw and Orlando Arcia singled and scored when second baseman Scooter Gennett misplayed Brett Phillips' grounder.
Even with a healthy lead, Davies couldn't harness his command. He worked around two singles in the fourth but gave way to the bullpen after Billy Hamilton led off with a triple and Cozart walked to open the fifth.
Joey Votto's sacrifice fly got the Reds within three, but Josh Hader (2-3) struck out Gennett and Suarez to end the threat.
Four of the next five Reds hitters struck out before Cozart made it 6-4 with a solo home run to left. A walk to Votto and base hit by Gennett brought Hader's day to an end, but Suarez made it a one-run game with an RBI single off Anthony Swarzak.
Hernan Perez put the Brewers up 7-5 with a sac fly in the seventh, but Winker got the Reds back within in a run by homering off Swarzak in the eighth.
Corey Knebel posted his 38th save with a scoreless ninth.
NOTES: Cincinnati RHP Drew Storen underwent successful Tommy John surgery and will miss all of the 2018 season, manager Bryan Price said. Storen went 4-2 with a 4.45 ERA in 58 appearances this season, his first with the Reds, who signed him to a one-year, $3 million contract last winter. ... Brewers C Manny Pina has made "small progress" with his sprained left thumb but missed his fourth straight game and it is still unknown when, or if, he can return to action, manager Craig Counsell said.
