Washington Nationals vs Miami Marlins Match Player Stats On Aug 25, 2021

Jorge Alfaro hit a walk-off single in the 10th inning as the host Miami Marlins snapped their eight-game losing streak by beating the Washington Nationals 4-3 on Wednesday night.

Jesus Sanchez, who earned an assist with his strong throw to the plate in the top of the 10th inning, scored the winning run.

Edward Cabrera, Miami's 23-year-old right-hander, who was making his major-league debut, held Washington scoreless for six innings before running into trouble. His final line: 6 1/3 innings, four hits, three walks and three runs. He struck out two.

Cabrera's fastball reached as high as 98 mph, but he allowed two homers, both on change-ups. He got a no-decision.

Josiah Gray, Washington's own 23-year-old rookie right-hander, also got a no-decision. He allowed five hits, three walks and two runs in six innings, striking out seven.

The game featured home runs by Washington's Josh Bell and Yadiel Hernandez and Miami's Brian Anderson.

Dylan Floro (5-4) earned the win; Kyle Finnegan (4-5) took the loss.

Miami opened the scoring in the second as Anderson drew a full-count walk, advanced on a groundout and scored on Alfaro's single to left.

Marlins rookie center fielder Bryan De La Cruz kept a run from scoring in the third inning, making a sensational catch against the wall on a drive by Lane Thomas. Had that two-out shot bounced off the wall, Luis Garcia would've scored.

Anderson's 420-foot homer to center gave Miami a 2-0 lead in the sixth.

Cabrera, after getting ground-ball double plays in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, couldn't escape a jam in the seventh. Alcides Escobar drew a leadoff walk, winning an eight-pitch battle. Escobar then jogged home on Bell's 413-foot homer to center. It was Bell's 21st homer of the year.

The next batter, Hernandez, homered to give Washington a 3-2 lead. A walk to Carter Kieboom ended Cabrera's night.

Miami tied the score in the bottom of the seventh as Magneuris Sierra drilled a pinch-hit triple to right and scored on Jesus Aguilar's RBI double. It was Aguilar's 89th RBI of the year.

In the top of the 10th, Riley Adams singled, but Marlins right fielder Sanchez's strong two-hop throw nailed Kieboom at the plate. Alfaro made the tag, and he made just as big a play with his bat in the bottom of the inning.
