Miami Marlins vs New York Mets Match Player Stats On Sep 02, 2021

Pinch hitter Dominic Smith delivered a tiebreaking, seventh-inning single Thursday night for the host New York Mets, who overcame an early deficit to complete an unusual sweep of the Miami Marlins with a 4-3 win.

The Mets (66-67) officially took two games from the Marlins (55-79) but actually beat Miami three times since the series opener Monday. New York scored five runs in the ninth inning Tuesday to earn a 6-5 win in the completion of a game suspended by rain with one out in the top of the first inning April 11.

Heavy rains forced the postponement of the middle game of the series Wednesday.

With one out in the seventh Thursday, Jeff McNeil and Patrick Mazeika singled off Sandy Alcantara (8-13) before Smith, batting for winning pitcher Jeurys Familia, hit a 2-2 pitch just fair down the first base line.

Familia (9-3) threw a perfect seventh before Trevor May and Edwin Diaz (28th save) combined for two hitless innings.

The game began in historic fashion, and the Mets faced a 2-0 deficit before Carlos Carrasco recorded an out.

Miguel Rojas homered on Carrasco's first pitch. Jazz Chisholm Jr. followed by doubling off the glove of shortstop Francisco Lindor and taking third on an error by center fielder Brandon Nimmo. Jesus Aguilar then laced an RBI single.

The Mets wasted no time cutting the gap in half as Jonathan Villar homered on Alcantara's first pitch in the bottom of the inning. It was the first time since 1988, when pitch counts were first tracked, that each team homered on the first pitch of the game.

New York took the lead in the fourth. Nimmo legged out an infield single, took second on a throwing error by third baseman Isan Diaz and scored on Lindor's double. Lindor went to third on Pete Alonso's groundout and scored when Alcantara balked.

Carrasco retired 12 in a row following Aguilar's run-scoring hit and set down 15 of the final 18 batters he faced. Aaron Loup entered with two on in the sixth and issued back-to-back walks to Jesus Sanchez and Lewis Brinson, the latter of which forced home the tying run.

Carrasco allowed three runs on four hits and one walk while striking out five in 5 1/3 innings. Alcantara gave up four runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out six over 6 1/3 innings.
