James Wood had four hits, Andres Chaparro supplied three doubles in his major league debut and the Washington Nationals, who often have offensive woes, scored in five different innings to defeat the host Baltimore Orioles 9-3 on Tuesday night.

Ildemaro Vargas drove in three runs, Wood went 4-for-5 with three runs and Chaparro scored twice as the Nationals opened the two-game set by winning for the third time in a four-game stretch.

Chaparro, a first baseman who was called up from Triple-A Rochester, had played 627 games in the minor leagues across eight seasons. Wood, a rookie outfielder, posted his second four-hit game of the season.

CJ Abrams (three) and Jacob Young (two) added to Washington's 14-hit total. The Nationals hadn't scored more than five runs in any of their previous five games.

Nationals starter Jake Irvin (9-10) was the winning pitcher, going six innings and allowing two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.

Anthony Santander homered, while Ryan O'Hearn, Ryan Mountcastle and Adley Rutschman all had two hits for Baltimore, which came off a 10-game road trip by losing its second game in a row.

Trevor Rogers (2-11) took the loss, giving up five runs in five-plus innings. He's 0-2 in three starts since he was acquired from the Miami Marlins in a trade.

Baltimore relievers Bryan Baker and Keegan Akin were both charged with two runs.

The Nationals took a 2-0 first-inning lead on Wood's two-out single and when Juan Yepez scored while Wood was caught in a rundown.

Mountcastle's second-inning single got the Orioles on the board. Baltimore tied the score on Santander's one-out homer in the third, marking his 36th blast of the season.

Vargas and Luis Garcia Jr. hit back-to-back sacrifice flies in the fourth to put Washington in front. Vargas rapped a two-run single in the sixth before Young knocked in a run with a single.

Chaparro's third double plated a run to make it 8-2 in the eighth. Keibert Ruiz added an RBI single in the ninth.
