Last Meeting ( Feb 5, 2019 ) San Diego St. 70, New Mexico 83

San Diego State coach Brian Dutcher is running out of adjectives to describe his undefeated squad, whose 21-game win streak ranks as the longest in school history. The fourth-ranked Aztecs look to maintain their perfect record on Wednesday against host New Mexico, which is 13-0 at The Pit this season.

Malachi Flynn scored 21 points and Trey Pulliam added a career-high 18 in last Sunday’s 71-67 win at UNLV as San Diego State remained the lone undefeated team in the nation. Flynn has scored in double figures in 11 straight games and is averaging 16.8 points, 5.0 assists and 3.6 rebounds to pace the Aztecs, who lead the Mountain West in scoring defense at 57.2 points per game. “I told the guys, I love coaching them but I love sitting and watching them, too,” Dutcher told reporters. “They’re fun to watch. They play the right way. I mean, come on, this is a magnificent team the way they play. Someone is going to have to play a heck of a game to beat this Aztecs team.” San Diego State has a tough matchup against Utah State at home on Saturday but first needs to be careful not to overlook New Mexico, which is 30-11 all-time against the Aztecs in Albuquerque.

ABOUT SAN DIEGO STATE (21-0, 10-0 Mountain West): Senior forward Yanni Wetzell is averaging 15.5 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists while shooting 62.9 percent from the field over the last five games. The team’s stellar backcourt includes Santa Clara transfer KJ Feagin, who strengthened his case for Mountain West defensive player of the year after holding UNLV leading scorer Amauri Hardy to a season-low two points in 31 minutes on Sunday. Forward Matt Mitchell is averaging 12.4 points and six rebounds in league play but has been limited to 23 and 21 minutes in the last two games due to foul trouble.

ABOUT NEW MEXICO (16-6, 5-4): Off-the-court issues have been a constant distraction for the Lobos, who fell 96-74 to Nevada last Saturday without suspended starters J.J. Caldwell and Carlton Bragg. Coach Paul Weir was also minus Ohio State transfer JaQuan Lyle, who leads the team in scoring at 17.1 points per game but missed Saturday’s contest with a knee injury and is listed as day-to-day. Guard Zane Martin recorded a season-high 23 points with four assists and three rebounds in the loss to Nevada while Vante Hendrix added 19 points.
