Alouettes 23, Argonauts 20: Troy Smith threw three touchdown passes as visiting Montreal finished its season with another victory in Toronto.
Smith completed 15-of-28 passes for 197 yards and connected with Duron Carter, Arland Bruce and Bo Bowling for touchdowns for the Alouettes (8-10), who also defeated the Argonauts 20-9 at Rogers Centre on Sept. 3. Linebacker Chip Cox recorded two of the team’s six sacks.
Toronto (11-7) pulled quarterback Zach Collaros near the end of the first quarter and replaced him with Trevor Harris, who was 6-of-9 for 110 yards and one touchdown toss to Darvin Adams, and Mitchell Gale, who went 3-of-9 for 36 yards. Jerious Norwood gained 102 yards on eight carries as the Argonauts rested their starters for most of the game.
Smith’s 37-yard touchdown pass to Bruce with 2:47 remaining in the fourth quarter gave Montreal the lead, and Smith extended it with a quarterback sneak on the two-point conversion. Gale, who took over under center for Toronto late in the third quarter, could not muster a response on offence, going 1-of-4 on the ensuing drive.
Argonauts safety Matt Black returned an interception 62 yards for a touchdown 3:26 into the contest. Smith found Carter for a 71-yard score and Bowling for a 3-yard TD in a span of 3:12 in the second quarter to put Montreal ahead 15-11 at halftime. Adams caught his first CFL touchdown pass midway through the third.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Montreal CB Geoff Tisdale appeared to roll his ankle in the fourth quarter and limped to the sideline. Tisdale leads all CFL players with seven interceptions. … Toronto finished the regular season with three interceptions returned for touchdowns. … Montreal will play the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in Guelph in the East semifinal on Nov. 10. The Argonauts await the winner in Toronto on Nov. 17. … The Argonauts finished the season 4-5 at home.
