Iowa State Cyclones vs Baylor Bears Match Player Stats On Sep 28, 2019

John Mayers made his first career field goal from 38 yards with 21 seconds left to lift the Baylor Bears to a 23-21 win over the Iowa State Cyclones on Saturday in Waco, Texas.

Brock Purdy rallied Iowa State from a 20-0 fourth-quarter deficit and put the Cyclones ahead 21-20 with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Charlie Kolar with 3:45 remaining in the game.

Charlie Brewer navigated the Bears 54 yards in 14 plays to set up the game-winner from Mayers, who had missed from 38 yards earlier in the game.

Baylor (4-0, 1-0 Big 12) now has won six straight games.

Brewer completed 26 of 45 pass attempts for 307 yards and three touchdowns. Denzel Mims caught two touchdowns and Tyquan Thornton hauled in the other score.

A week after compiling more than 700 yards of offense and putting up 72 points against Louisiana-Monroe, the Cyclones (2-2, 0-1 Big 12) had 405 total yards, with most coming in the fourth quarter when Purdy led Iowa State on three straight touchdown drives.

Purdy, who threw for 475 yards and accounted for six touchdowns against Louisiana-Monroe, completed 27 of 45 attempts for 342 yards and two touchdowns.

Iowa State finally got on the board on Johnnie Lang's 3-yard run early in the fourth, making the score 20-7.

Baylor turned the ball over on downs and Purdy made the Bears pay, driving the Cyclones 72 yards in eight plays with Lang scoring on a 12-yard pass to make it a 20-14 game.

Baylor was unable to move the ball and the Cyclones took over on their own 35. With the aid of two facemask penalties, Iowa State needed just 2:45 to take the lead when Purdy found Kolar. The extra point put Iowa State up 21-20.

But with 3:45 left, there was plenty of time for Brewer and the Bears offense to set up Mayers' heroics.
