Jordan Mason's 1-yard touchdown run in overtime lifted Georgia Tech to a 28-21 upset win at Miami in an Atlantic Coast Conference clash on Saturday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets (2-5, 1-3 ACC) snapped a four-game losing streak.
The Hurricanes (3-4, 1-3) came up short in overtime on a fourth-down pass play to Brevin Jordan. The play was initially called a first down at the 3. But after video replay, the officials pushed the ball back a yard and an ensuing measurement came up about 2 inches short.
Mason ran 20 times for a career-high 141 yards.
Hurricanes quarterback N'Kosi Perry tossed two touchdown passes and ran for one. Cam'Ron Harris ran 18 times for a career-high 136 yards for Miami.
Miami missed three short field goals in the game, from 34, 27 and 25 yards -- two by Turner Davidson and one by Bubba Baxa. Davidson missed a 25-yarder with 26 seconds left that likely would've given Miami the victory.
Miami was without starting wide receiver Jeff Thomas, who was suspended for one game due to an undisclosed rules violation. The Hurricanes' top running back, DeeJay Dallas, left the game in the first quarter due to a left-knee injury and did not return.
Georgia Tech got off to a great start on Miami's first possession when Ja'Quon Griffin recovered Perry's fumble in the end zone. Miami was trying to throw a screen pass on third-and-8 from its 11, but Demetrius Knight blitzed, sacked Perry and forced the fumble.
Miami tied the score 7-7 on Perry's 1-yard sneak, capping an 11-play, 64-yard drive.
The Hurricanes took a 14-7 lead on their next possession, a one-play "drive" set up by K.J. Osborn's 52-yard punt return. On the next snap, Perry threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Osborn on a back-shoulder throw. Osborn stretched the ball over the right pylon.
The Yellow Jackets tied the score 14-14 with 10 seconds left in the first quarter on a fake punt. Punter Pressley Harvin III lofted a perfect 41-yard touchdown pass to Nathan Cottrell.
Miami went back on top 21-14 in the second period on Perry's 19-yard screen pass to Harris.
Georgia Tech closed the first-half scoring on a 35-yard touchdown pass from James Graham to Ahmarean Brown with 53 seconds left in the second quarter.
A scoreless second half led to a dramatic overtime finish.
