Vanderbilt running back Ke'Shawn Vaughn had 176 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns, and the defense held Missouri to season lows in points and yards as the Commodores shocked the No. 22 Tigers 21-14 on homecoming Saturday at Nashville, Tenn.
Quarterback Kelly Bryant threw for 140 yards and ran for 72 for the Tigers, who had 293 yards and averaged just 4.4 yards a snap.
The Tigers (5-2, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) were 21-point favorites but saw a five-game winning streak snapped by the same team UNLV throttled 34-10 the prior week.
Vanderbilt (2-5, 1-3) had second-half momentum, leading 14-7 when cornerback Allan George picked Bryant in the end zone with 6:44 left in the third quarter.
Then, Missouri starting safety Tyree Gillespie was ejected for a helmet-to-helmet targeting hit on Vanderbilt quarterback Mo Hasan, who started and got his first snaps of the season.
Commodores quarterback Riley Neal -- their starter for the first six games -- threw a pick right to Missouri middle linebacker Cameron Wilkins late in the third quarter. Wilkins returned it 42 yards to the Vanderbilt 6, setting up a 6-yard scoring run for running back Larry Rountree III.
Tied 14-14, Neal hit wide receiver Cam Johnson with a long out on third-and-7, and Johnson wiggled his way down the right sideline for a 21-yard touchdown with 8:57 remaining. Those would be the winning points.
Missouri got inside the Vanderbilt 30 on its next trip, but outside linebacker Andre Mintze dragged Bryant down from behind for a third-down sack, setting up kicker Tucker McCann's missed field goal from 48.
Vanderbilt then ran out the final six minutes, thanks mostly to Vaughn and two crucial offsides penalties on the Tigers.
Missouri drove to the Vanderbilt 20 late in the first quarter before a false start penalty and a sack by outside linebacker Lashawn Paulino-Bell knocked the Tigers back a dozen yards before McCann missed a field goal.
Hasan then hit his first big play of the day, a 34-yard toss to wide receiver Kalija Lipscomb. On a third-and-15 from the Missouri 22, Hasan got through a blitz to the 1, setting up Vaughn's 1-yard scoring run for a 7-0 lead.
Wide receiver Kam Scott 55-yard catch-and-run down the left sideline got the Tigers to the 4. Bryant's 4-yard throw to tight end Albert Okwuegbunam to the left corner of the end zone, combined with McCann's PAT, tied the game.
Vanderbilt answered when Vaughn took a short screen from Hasan, used his blocks wisely, and sprinted 61 yards, nearly untouched, down the left side for a score late in the half.
