Joe Burrow passed for one touchdown and ran for another as No. 2 LSU passed its stiffest test of the season, holding off No. 9 Auburn 23-20 in Baton Rouge, La., on Saturday afternoon.

LSU had its lowest-scoring game of the season, but Burrow was still outstanding. He completed 32 of 42 passes for 321 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown pass to Terrace Marshall Jr., and he later ran for a 7-yard touchdown run for what proved to be the difference in the game.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire rushed for 136 yards, including a 6-yard touchdown run, as LSU (8-0, 4-0 SEC) overcame its first second-half deficit of the season to stay on a collision course with No. 1 Alabama in two weeks. Both Alabama and LSU are on byes next week.

D.J. Williams rushed for 130 yards for Auburn (6-2, 3-2), which lost for the second time in three games. Quarterback Bo Nix completed just 15 of 35 passes for 157 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

LSU faced its second-half deficit after Williams ran 70 yards to set up Anders Carlson's 23-yard field goal, which broke a 10-10 tie early in the third quarter.

On its next possession, LSU had its first red-zone failure of the season when Burrow threw a 1-yard completion to Ja'Marr Chase on fourth and goal from the 2. LSU had been 40 for 40 in the red zone.

But two LSU possessions later, after taking over at the Auburn 45 following a punt, and Edwards-Helaire ran four times for 45 yards and his touchdown for a 16-13 lead after three quarters.

Burrow added his rushing touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Nix threw a 5-yard touchdown to Seth Williams with about 2 1/2 minutes remaining to make it 23-20, but LSU recovered an onside kick and ran out the clock.

The Auburn defense slowed down the second-highest scoring team in the country (50.1 points per game) from the start.

Carlson kicked a 30-yard field goal to give Auburn a 3-0 lead after one quarter. It was just the second time this season that LSU trailed at the end of a quarter.

LSU took a 7-3 lead on the Burrow touchdown pass to Marshall, but Auburn regained the lead on a Nix sneak on fourth and goal from the 1.

LSU made it 10-10 at the half on Cade York's 20-yard field goal with 33 seconds left in the second quarter.
