Kenneth Walker III rushed for 128 yards and three touchdowns as Wake Forest recorded a 40-23 victory over Virginia on Saturday in an Atlantic Coast Conference game in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Walker's last two touchdowns came within a span of 1:36 as the Demon Deacons (2-2, 1-2) seized a 37-23 lead early in the fourth quarter.
Sam Hartman completed 16 of 27 passes for 309 yards and a touchdown. Jaquarii Roberson caught seven of those passes for 126 yards.
The Cavaliers (1-3, 1-3) used three quarterbacks as Lindell Stone passed for 193 yards, Keytaon Thompson rushed for 71 yards and Iraken Armstead ran for 46 yards and a touchdown.
Wake Forest benefited from two interceptions, a fumble recovery and no turnovers on offense, which helped it overcome 12 penalties for 119 yards.
The score was tied at 20 at halftime, and the only points of the third quarter came on Nick Sciba's 38-yard field goal that gave the Deacons the lead.
The Cavaliers needed less than two minutes of the fourth quarter to tie the score again on Brian Delaney's 42-yard field goal.
On the next offensive play, Walker ran 75 yards for a touchdown for Wake Forest.
The Deacons recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, leading to a 9-yard touchdown run by Walker.
Sciba's fourth field goal, a 44-yarder, increased the lead to 40-23 with 5:36 left.
Wake Forest seized an early 14-0 lead as Hartman threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to A.T. Perry and Walker ran 3 yards for a score.
Delaney kicked a 32-yard field goal cut the lead to 14-3 at the end of the first quarter.
The Cavaliers scored their first touchdown on a 4-yard run by Armstead. Sciba then kicked a 32-yard field goal to give the Deacons a 17-10 lead.
Delaney kicked a 29-yard field goal and Sciba answered with a 25-yarder, giving Wake Forest a 20-13 lead.
Wayne Taulapapa ran 15 yards for a touchdown that pulled the Cavaliers even at halftime.
