Virginia Tech Hokies vs Wake Forest Demon Deacons Match Player Stats On Oct 24, 2020

Freshman walk-on Nick Andersen had three interceptions to lift Wake Forest to a 23-16 victory over No. 19 Virginia Tech on Saturday in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Quarterback Sam Hartman and Kenneth Walker III each rushed for a touchdown for the Demon Deacons (3-2, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), who have won three in a row overall. The victory was Wake Forest's first over Virginia Tech since a 6-3 double-overtime decision on Nov. 22, 2014.

Christian Beal-Smith rushed 13 times for 129 yards, with 91 coming in the first quarter.

Hendon Hooker threw for 223 yards and rushed for 98 more for the Hokies (3-2, 3-2), who were whistled for 10 penalties for 112 yards en route to losing for the second time in three games.

Virginia Tech defensive tackle Jarrod Hewitt was ejected for targeting early in the third quarter after administering a helmet-to-helmet shot on Hartman. Hewitt was then whistled for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after taking issue with the officials' call, with the 30 yards in penalties extending the drive. Nick Sciba capped the drive with a 46-yard field goal to give Wake Forest a 20-10 advantage.

Brian Johnson made the final two of his three field goals for the Hokies, while Sciba added his third of the day for the rest of the scoring. The Hokies attempted to rally on their last possession, but Andersen sealed the win with his third interception of the afternoon.

Hartman rushed for a 9-yard score and Sciba drilled a 41-yard field goal to stake Wake Forest to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter.

Virginia Tech answered as Johnson capped a 13-play drive with a 28-yard field goal before Hooker found an uncovered James Mitchell over the middle for a 39-yard touchdown.

The Demon Deacons countered as Walker capped a 17-play, 75-yard drive with a determined touchdown run from 6 yards out to claim a 17-10 lead. Wake Forest converted three plays on fourth down and took 7:09 off the clock.

The Hokies attempted to respond just before halftime. But Andersen reeled in a deflected ball that caromed off the hands of Virginia Tech's Kaleb Smith for an interception in the end zone.
